large amount of micro management and interference
A key reason why I'm no longer a bank manager!

its absolutely ridiculous mate, I'm just an adviser but I read the emails that are sent down to managers (they forgot to remove my email access) and its just beyond the pale.

"get x number of products before x time or you'll be on a conference call at x time"

"everyone who underperforms on x product area needs to submit a plan by 4pm as to how they will improve"

"x branch did 5 x's yesterday, I expect each branch to deliver 6 today"

I honestly wonder why I bother for 16k

That's why I'm glad I'm out of that scenario, I don't know how much more of the negativity and micro-management I could have taken in a branch. :(

It's VERY much a sales oriantated environment these days (unfortunately), so please bear that in mind. EVERYONE in a branch has a sales target, so bear that in mind when applying.

    Best of luck :)
  • When I left school I wanted to work in a bank. Was offered a position as a trainee bank manager in the early 1970's but declined it. Then worked for Halifax in the late 1990's and Lloyds Banks and enjoyed every minute of it.

However pleased I am now retired.

sounds good to most people to say you work in a bank

Maybe five years ago... but not so much today :(

All you get is comments about extortionate bonuses.

Its the same in the contact centres and the targets never seem to go down :)
  • depending on the position that is advertised, you would need to meet certain criteria of the "fit and proper person" requirements from the FSA. On a broad scale this is how you conduct yourself financially as well as other benchmarks and criteria. They would do a credit check on you, normally they require you top open a staff bank account with them also.

There would be targets - I think most jobs these days have these - but I think the big taxpayer backed banks have more of a hard core push on the targets (from conversations with ex employees of these banks)

I think any job has it's good and bad points but I would say go for it! If you get it and don't like the job or the branch, it is a fantastic way of getting your foot in the door of another industry from the one you are in the now and you will find it easier to apply for other jobs in the sector.

    good luck!
On my way to well earned riches (I hope!) :T:T:T
