I've heard it said that if you're having a large wedding, it's usually best to avoid numbers, as the guests at Table 18 may be offended!!!

Just because it's the last - it implies priority. So the "good" people are on table 1, then the "B listers" are on table 2 - by the time you're on 18/18, you probably didn't get your invites at the same time as everyone else! Oh gosh, it hurts my ego just thinking about it!0 -

Exactly. Could be 18/18 or 12/12 or 29/29. Numbered tables are a minefield!!!

I can't believe people would be offended by the number. I think the actual position is more of an indication of your 'importance'!! The tables closest to the top table are traditionally seen as the more important ones with the friends and aquaintances being furthest away. So, number them backwards if you are worried about people being offended!
A quick tip, the Top table should always be served first, with the tables nearest being followed next etc. So if you have someone you know struggles without being fed OR who is likely to get a bit drunk if not fed quickly put them on a table near the bride and groom!
