How big should a kitten be to be neutered?

I have a lovely tortie kitten who I was fostering, she had 2 brothers who were twice her size (now re-homed), and she is now 8 months old and I'm keeping her. I know she needs to be neutered but she just still seems so tiny. I weighed her in at 2.6kg so I guess that theoretically she is big enough but it seems wrong somehow when she is still such a small kitten?

She has NOT been out yet but really wants to. I don't think she has come into season yet either....I'm just so worried about putting my tiny kitten under the anaethetic :( and wondering if I should wait a bit longer? Problem is, it's so hard to keep her in when they others are going in and out. Not so bad in the very cold weather but now it's getting warmer it's going to mean locking her in the bedroom when I'm at work...

My Kiwi was spayed at about 6 months, she was very small, she's now nearly 3 and only weighs 2.7kg.

Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.

My friend had her kitty done recently and had to wait until it weighed 2kg before the vet would do it.

  • We had our kitten done at 4 months, she recovered incredibly well, didnt even touch her wound, I think the trip to the vets was more traumatic for her though, only time I have heard her hiss and she is 9 months now and still quite small.

4-6 months seems the general. If I remember rightly (long time ago), Misty was done around 5 months. Take her to the vet and ask their advice, they won't do it if they think she's too young. I wouldn't be letting her outside until she has been done though, just in case. Maybe she's just going to be a small cat, whereas Misty has always been big, even as a kitten she was bigger than all the others.

Six months is about right. You need to be aware that they can conceive at around 6 - 9 months and if you leave it too long the patter of little paws may result!

If your worried just ask your Vet for advice. Most will give it free over the phone for something as straightforward as this.

Eek, no patter of little paws in my house, I already have plenty and there are already too many unloved kitties in the world.:(..

I'll see what the vet says....I think part of me knows I will have to let her out and give her freedom when she is speyed...she looks wistfully at the others playing in the garden and the pond is all netted over for her safe exploring when the time comes!

Having her locked indoors is nice for me though cos she is safe from the big bad world...

  • We are keeping our cat as a house cat, but it is hard as you can tell she would like to go out, she stares out of the windows, especially at the birds!! But we live so close to a very busy road that I really dont think is safe. But do wonder that it is kind of ineviatable that she will get out at some stage!

2kg is the weight at which they can be neutered from what I know, some vets neuter at 4 months of age as long as the weight is there

Macius is going to have his balls chopped off soon, he does not kow that et though - he will be 5 month old on 5th March, weights around 2.6kg now so at some point im march....

All mine have been Spayed at 6 months. She won't have had a season yet as you'll definitely know when she does. It's best to contact the Vet as in dogs they Spay 3 months after a season generally & I have no idea if it's the same with cats. She may possibly be too close to a first season for them to be happy to attempt it now but i'd have no idea. She'll be fine, all of mine have been about that weight when done, not lost one or had complications yet & i've had cats for 27yrs & over 20 of them in total x

She's booked in for Friday. I'm giving her all her favourite foods to try and fatten her up!

Will be pacing the floor until they ring me to say she's ok and to come and get her....
