Citroen Saxo 1.4 SX Auto MPG Issues

I've been getting very poor MPG from my Saxo 1.4 SX auto. I'm only getting 15 MPG for some bizzare reason according to an online calculator today!

I know Automatics are not the most fuel efficient of cars but this is very poor.

Any ideas what this might be if anyone could shed some light?

NB. I have put a new Air filter in today but not tested it yet. The engine management light is not on either so no sensor issues showing either.

Check the Engine breathers, I think they have a gauze filter inline that once bunged the engine really has to suck for its fuel.
The whole pipe is only a few quid.

Silly question..where are they on the engine block?;)
  • have you done a tank and checkd to odometer to calculate the average MPG? Maybe you are lucky and it is the calculator :)

(fill tank, drive, refill and you have used however many liters you managed to add, simples!)

Yes done that. Brimmed tank, did 25 miles, refilled tank 7.75 litres at 1.35 per litre. Came back as 15.4 MPG

The 2nd pump managed to get more fuel into the car than the 1st one thats all.

The test you did was not accurate. Some pumps cut off sooner than others, Parl an extra few inches away from the pump and the slope may alter the fuel level.

You should fill it and recheck after using a full tankful. Or run it until the 1/4 or fuel light etc then fill to max.

Over a full tank or better still several tanks it will even itself out. But over 25 miles your not going to get anywhere near an accurate reading.

It may not be 100% correct, but it's a reasonable estimate for the 25 miles. Though if most of that was in town etc.. indeed a whole tank gives a better picture.

i would be checking for seized front calipers
    or delaminated rear shoes
both problems occur on this model and would cause abysmal fuel economy

Not enough. You need to do it over at least half a tank, preferably a full one.

Surely depends on the use of the car, driving kids a mile to school, parking and home isn't going to give you great mpg.

    Leak in the fuel system?

This could be caused by 101 reasons most of which can be discounted by visual inspection. Just start going through them.
