pram/buggy for large heavy toddler?

Options
just wondering if anyone has any suggestions (not too expensive!) for which pram might suit young roo. his techno XT is brilliant but the seat just doesn't seem deep or sturdy enough for him. he's 18 months old so probably needs a pram on and off for another year or so so it's probably worth getting one that suits him better.

i thought some of you might have had enormous children, or had children in buggies at age 3 or older and might know which brands are worth looking at. i haven't had him weighed in months but he will be more than 13kg. his height is off the top of the scale at 91cm barefoot (and those feet are size 7!!). he's got broad shoulders and chest and looks squished in some prams.

he's not fat but he is chunky. he wears size 5 nappies and prams just don't look like the seat is as big as his bottom!! he isn't comfortable in the techno, perhaps him climbing into it himself has put excess weight on the metal bits for the extending seat.

My son is 4 and will still use a buggy sometimes on holidays etc ! And he isnt a skinny thing lol

We have the Maclaren Quest and I have found it fab,but as you have tried the chunkier / sturdier Maclaren Techno I am guessing it wont be any good for you :(
  • I had exactly the same problem with DS1. We ended up with this one.

They seem to have adapted it and it's more expensive. But it might be worth looking at as my lad is a great big biffer and he fitted into it comfortably!

  • It also lies flat for newborns, incase that might come in useful at a later date.......

Nearly at the end of my pushchair days so not up on what all the brands look like, but have you tried a 3 wheel pushchair. Mine is wider than the buggys/pushchair I've had and can be easily steered with one hand. No idea if they still make the one I've got, but I bought it in mothercare 5 years ago and paid around £110.
  • The quinny is a 3 wheeler, but depending on the size of the tot, it might not be any good. DS sat in his friend's when we were looking and his head poked right out of the top so the hood wouldn't go down. You can get bigger ones though. Britax do a 3 wheeler that looks bigger.

We had a Maclaren Triumph for our LO who is heavier and taller than average. The good thing about this is that it has a low centre of gravity, so fairly easy to push, with a heavy child in it. The hood does come off with a bit of effort. We used it until he was about three and a half, as I didn't have any transport of my own, so it was a mile and a half walk each way to nursery. I found that he had to be shoehorned into it towards the end of this time, but it did a really good job.
  • Mountain buggy's are fantastic for the larger child, but are expensive for what they cost. We also have an XTS twister which is very robust, and has a large seat. My 4 year old who is not small can still sleep in it if we go away on holiday. The XTS is my fav out of the two as it folds up smaller than most of the other 3 wheelers, and the fram is aluminium so its quite light. My other half prefers the mountain buggy, but she would as it costs twice as much!
  • thanks for replies! i'm still thinking but my husband is of the opinion that we won't need a pram much now that he's 18 months. hmmm ....

went out without it to school tonight thinking he would walk but he sat in the middle of the pavement and refused to move. he's really heavy and i didn't want to carry him (that's what he was yelling for). we were 40 mins late for playgroup today because he was 'walking', just a 10 minute walk through the town centre from asda where we got dropped off by car. i think a pram is still a must-have.

so do I at 18 months, especially since I think you don't drive, is that right. My eldest wasn't using a pushchair at 3. I know this cos DD was born then and I never had a double pushchair. DD is almost 4 and only in last couple of weeks has she been leaping out of pushchair and saying she'd rather walk.

    Urban Detour was my choice.

My little one was almost 11 lb born, his first shoes were size 7 at 13 months. He's now almost 5 and in age 7 trousers because he's so tall.

I got mine off Ebay for less than half what Mothercare charge but check your local Ad-Mag. They usually go for around £50. Look around on childcare website so you know what the latest colours /designs are , then you will be better able to judge how much wear & tear they have had :)
