I do understand it was only delivered 3 days ago and it can take a while for the signature to update. I just don't understand why it has been updated with the following message:

Thank you for using this service.
Sorry, an electronic proof of delivery is not available for this item.

Reading that, it seems like there is no proof of delivery available and won't update at a later time. The message which we both got for the past 3 days was:

Sorry, your electronic proof of delivery is not available at the moment. Please come back and check again in 24 hours. On occasion, we experience delays with this service and it can take up to 5 working days for electronic proof of delivery to be available. If your proof of delivery is still not available after 5 days, please contact Customer Services on 08457 740 740"

Is the buyer disputing delivery? Why do you need a signature?

Yes as stated in my OP, my friends buyer claims the item has not been delivered. We would like to know who signed for it if possible but from the updated message showing today it doesn't seem like a signature was requested.

I see, tell your friend that whilst normally it would be prudent to help the buyer, in this instance they cannot. As the item was under £150 they don't need to show a signature to defend a case. Hopefully the buyer will find it with their neighbour, friend, spouse, parent!

    well thats down to IT
there is no track in deliveries to create that message
    its delivered and awaiting scan
until it is physically scanned, there is no track update
most likely the site waits 72 hours and defaults to that message

I have just tracked another item my friend posted first class recorded on Saturday, item was delivered half an hour ago and the signature is updated online so if the item in question has been signed for then it must have been the paper form which could take longer to update.

Either that or no signature was requested.

I already know that a paper form signature takes a while to update.

I am asking the question for a friend as I have posted many items RD in the past and never seen that message before so I guessed it was either signed for on paper or not at all.

When my friend first tracked the item it was showing as attempted delivery and held at the recipients local DO. My guess was that it had been collected from the DO or delivered to the address and no signature requested. What I didn't know is that it wouldn't show as delivered if there was no signature requested.
