Quick and sad update on my ex banger:
BMW 328i Touring, bought at 162k miles for £700, sold 18 months later at 178k miles for £700. New owner suffered water pump failure on the motorway at 185k miles, then broke bits when trying to fix it.
It's now in limbo being used as a gate for a scrap yard.
Easily fixable and still starting and running, but destined for the autobahn in the sky.0 -
At least it didn't break on your watch and you got some excellent value out of it.0

I think the following may qualify for "Bangernomics".
I bought a 97 Alfa GTV 8 years ago for £2000, and it is a lovely car, but needs a bit of TLC plus a steering rack/box. It has not been used for 3 years, but I have noticed that these cars (with all the relevant bits which I need and more - full leather interiors) sell for as little as £400.
I have a double garage, and was thinking of doing all the major work myself - bodywork, engine clean (great engine 103K miles, cambelt waterpump change), then buy a running donor car (check the steering), swap the good bits over, and resurrect a beauty.
It will also give me the opportunity to prepare and spray a car again:D
What is it about us guys, why do we need these projects to keep us happy? Is this the nearest we get nowadays to being a hunter gatherer?:)0 -
I've recently picked up an imported Celica (1995) for £550, milage is 99k but as it was imported in 2003 most of that will be in km so I'd reckon it's sub 80k.
All that seems to need doing is change the brake pads and free up a dragging caliper, which is on the list for tomorrow if the weather holds out.
Andy I agree, having little on going projects like this is what keeps me sane. Although I really must finish my MR2. :rotfl:
I also found 106 yen under the ashtray. Bonus! (yeah I know it's less than £1)0 -
I had a '88 Celica with a Yamaha block- what a car- one of the best I have ever had and went like a stabbed rat. I am sure that you will be very happy with it.0

This is Celica number 3 for me, I've had a Gen 4 (1989), Gen 5 (1993) and now a Gen 6.Practical, a giggle to drive and cheap.
All had the 2 litre 3S-GE (Yamaha unit).0 -
How about this one - not true bangernomics because he paid £14k, but a Mondeo with a million miles on the clock and still going strong.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-18443992Long-haul Supporters DFW 120

Just for the record, my Mondeo has cost me 18.75p per mile since I bought it, that includes everything, fuel, tax, insurance, depreciation, parts, MOTs etc. I've put on around 90k miles in 3 years so that does explain partly why the figures are so low.
Daily cost isn't so good at £15.15p but I do a lot of miles!
Anyone else got any figures?Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -
My Zafira probably costs over 20p a mile in petrol alone. And I've had that 8 years.0
