Hmm, it's a bit hocus-pocus. Have you tried more conventional treatments? CBT, hynotherapy, those one day fear of flying courses? How often do you need to fly? Do you fly alone? Short or long haul? How much does your fear of flying actually affect your life? I'm scared of flying, but seeing as I only have to do it about once every five years I just use my CBT techniques to try to calm myself down.

  • I havent tried any conventional methods. I would love to do a 1day fear of flying course but the cost puts me off.
I do fly once maybe twice a year, with family or just husband and its long haul

I knew someone once who said they were 'trained' in this - but they weren't despite practicing it and charging people a fortune!

It appears very unregulated to me, and I'm not sure that it will be helpful - I guess it will depend upon the person you get.
  • I saw one for my fear of water. Became more confident in myself but still scared of water. :o Then went for hypnotherapy and that eased my panicky fear - still can't swim but don't get that gut-wrenching feeling of being out of my depth (when up to my knees, pmsl)

So out of the two, the NLP didn't do much for me.

  • There are many people supposedly trained in NLP, in reality many have done very short weekend courses, and aren't properly qualified. There are bodies with strict requirements, and I personally know of someone who is very well qualified with strict requirements around hours etc. Have a look on thsi website, if you're thinking of going down the NLP route http://www.inlpta.co.uk/

I had to have NLP before I could even contemplate going on Virgins Flying Without Fear course, every time I went to book on one, I came out in a cold sweat. I used to see planes in the sky and shudder. If you fear is not too bad (and your signature reveals you have flown to the states) then book the course without NLP. It does use some of the same techniques but the knowledge it shares with the attendees was fantastic and of course, there is a flight at the end of the day. It was the best money I have ever spent and I wished I hadn't wasted 17 years of not being able to fly on a plane. I also had a top up treatment before a long flight in 2010 and I think its conquered.
Now when I see a plane in the air I think "i wish i was on the plane flying to somewhere nice"

The course is not just for fear of flying, it can be for people who have not flown before, children, adults, anyone. For me it was all to do with being in an enclosed space without being able to open a window or get off. Other people on the course were petrified of turbulence or just of the unknown. Everyone except 2 people did the flight and there's a forum for follow up and everyone went on to fly regularly.

I really can't recommend it enough - as an added bonus I got 5000 flying miles with Virgin too.

  • I have to say that as long as the person is certified as a master Practitioner I would give it a go.

I did a course to train as a practitioner (not master) through work and was very sceptical about it. It changed my life, I had many, many anxieties that stopped me functioning in certain areas of my life that disappeared after my course. I was on anti-anxiety medication and had been for several years. I found that I kept forgetting to take my pills until I just stopped taking them - I haven't had an anxiety or panic attack since. I had not told anyone on the course about my 'condition' it was through learning the techniques to use on others that I conquered my own anxieties.

i have nothing to gain by telling you this as I don't practice as an NLP practitioner although I use some of the skills I learned in dealing with people in my workplace.

I'd say if you can afford it then try it because it will work for you and it won't be months of sessions, for some people only one session can work.

    Good Luck.

rachel devon is absolutely right - find a properly trained and qualified practitioner first and discuss with him/her whether this method would help you.
as with all complementary therapists (and I am one - NOT NLP or I would offer to help you) there are a LOT of charlatans out there!

An occasional long haul flight taken with family is perfect for some decent knock-out drugs! Rather than trying a potentially expensive therapy that might not work, why not just ask the GP for either sleeping tablets or some valium? For the occasional long trip that I wasn't doing alone that's what I'd do.

You can't obviously take them to alleviate the anxiety you might feel in the lead-up to getting on a plane (it can bother me for weeks beforehand!) but knowing you've got some pills can help you to push it to the back of your mind.

If you did want a more permanent 'cure' I'd consider CBT before NLP. More regulated, better understood, probably better success rates, plus you can get in on the NHS.

  • Frankly I don't care how well 'trained' they are it's all nonsense. Even the training itself is just b0ll0cks !

I know this from a former business partner who was a Master Trainer and just went on about it incessantly and did fool me into setting up another business with him to deliver the training. During this period I met dozens and dozens of certified/qualified 'trainers' with many different companies and I wouldn't trust any of them with my cat.

These guys are the snake oil salesmen of the day.
