making the side bar optional

I don't know if there's been a thread about this, but I wondered if it would be possible to make the side panel over there ----> optional? So that it has a little set of arrows that can make it visible or invisible depending on if you want to see it? It drives me mad when on my phone because as I'm scrolling sometimes it gets the wrong idea and sends me to a different page. I mod on another forum which has this option for the side panel and I tend to have it visible on my computer but hidden on my phone.
