School Prom

DD has her school prom at the end of this year.

The money being spent seems crazy. Lots of the girls are spending £100s on their dresses and then there's the hair, makeup, nails, limo....

DD has a beautiful short dress which she got on the high street for a fraction of £100 which she is happy with and looks stunning in.
However, she has set her heart on going in a limo. MIL said she would help as a treat as DD has had a really tough year. However, one of the 4 girls has dropped out, been replaced and another dropped out and it looks like it isn't going to happen.

We don't have any friends with posh or vintage cars and going in a Clio or a Mondeo doesn't cut it. Any other (cheapish) suggestions?

Thought about writing to the Duke of Cambridge to see if he could do an airlift (I'm sure helicopter trumps limo) but I somehow don't think that will work. :rotfl:

School Proms are an American invention and just a money spending event like no other, what happened to the leaver's do where everyone turned up at the school hall and boys stood at one end and the girls at the other? I wish you luck OP nothing less than a white knight on a silver steed will suffice these days...

We are in the lucky position that the school our youngest goes to is not like the usual mainstream ones, It is specifically for students who are gifted in the creative arts, and as they are allowed to wear their own clothes and style their hair as they wish the need to compete is much less magnified, that said I am on the lookout for a vintage velvet jacket for him to wear with his usual uniform of torn jeans, safety pins and t shirts depicting various religous icons etc, or even worse,The Smiths, because many of the students have alternative lifestyles within the family there are no Limo's etc, which is really nice, and I am so glad we aren't having to go through that nonsense.
  • Think outside the box? I've been to proms where kids have turned up in a milk float, an ice cream van (complete with chimes!), a tractor & even a hearse! Ask friends to ask friends, it may be that someone has something surprising in their garage!
I have seen a girl turn up in a helicopter but I think most people just thought that was completely over the top & the ones who came in the ice cream van got a much better reception.

    Some brilliant ideas there,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • My niece went to her Prom in an old fashioned double decker bus. Because it could transport so many of them it actually worked out cheaper than taxis. A lot of the girls did have to sit downstairs though as they couldn't get up to the top deck in their dresses!

  • My son and his nine friends all went together. We parents paid £10 each. They arranged for it to come to our house because we lived the furthest away! Everyone was dropped off here, I provided non-alcoholic sparkling for them before they went. They all had a great time. My son refused a tux though, he just wore a suit!

  • I've suggested thinking outside the box and may be able to arrange a rally car - all that noise and power you'll certainly hear them coming! However, it seems that the "doing something different" isn't part of this particular school prom.

She has now been told by her school friends that her dress is too tarty for the prom. I'm sure it is just because she has great legs and looks absolutely fabulous and they are jealous but, obviously, she is now not happy.

Honestly, do the school realise how much agro these events cause?

My daughter is blessed in going to the largest prom in england(they did a tv programme about it) - basically we have 4 secondary schools in our town, and the prom is a major event. My eldest went 4 years ago and we managed to get her dress in a sale and along with 2 other friends a big favour we had a horse and carrage. It cost £50 each.

This year we have bought a dress in the sale for £100 and it will prob be sold after. Getting to the prom.... maybe in a sporty car if i can get one for an hr or so.

Gosh you poor mum, I know how I would feel as a mum. Are you sure they are friends or just school mates. We need to think about this so she can turn up in style with a smaller budget.
What area do you live and are you in a built up area or countryside. If you don't mind my asking what does dad do for a job, might give us a clue for some ideas of friends to ask. By the way the rally car sounds fantastic. We need to help her see that no matters what others do or say that she is wonderful doing it in her own style.
