  • So true about children reflecting you!

One of my pet hates is children in clothes that are too short, dirty or not matching when the parents are walking around lile they've stepped out of Vogue.

As long as the clothes fit, they are cleaned and ironed, appropriate for the activity and matching then the child will usually look great.

My children wear school uniform so I don't need to buy too much. I like nice quality clothing so bought dd about 10 items from Boden today and that should do her for the summer bar the odd bits and pieces, I will list the old stuff in good condition on ebay. DS seems to get given a lot of good label tshirts as presents, so he costs very little at the moment.
  • I have 6 aged from 16 to 3, the 16 year old works and so he buys all his own although I will buy him expensive trainers etc...as a main xmas/birthday present if he wants. 14 year DD has a paper round plus £15 per month spending and she will buy for herself and once a year(unless in dire need lol) we will hit the shops. Other 4 I tend to pick up something in Asda perhaps every other week.......this may sound alot but not when you work out its for 4 children. BUT mine always look scruffy :o they attract dirt and within minutes of doing their hair lovely they look like they have been dragged through hedges backwards:o

I spend far too much on clothes for my kids. I have real thing about them looking smart. I also have two teenage daughters who cost me a fortune. Im no snob though, Primark and H&M are where most of their stuff is from.

I don't have a set budget for kids clothes, but tend to pick them up in the Next sale in a larger size so they will grow into them, and i get hand me down from friends , plus the younger of my 2 hardly gets anything new bought for him, just hand me downs from big brother, not that he's worried, only being 4yrs old.

I've got a 3 year old daughter. I very rarely buy clothes for her as she seems to get a lot for birthdays and christmas from family. I buy her shoes and if I see a bargain, I will get it.

Do you have family/ friends who buy birthday and christmas presents for your kids? If they ask what your children would like, could you request clothes? This also helps to limit the toy mountain.

You could also keep an eye out for the sales and bulk buy.
  • I buy in the Next sale too, and also get a lot of branded things off ebay which can be very rewarding if you spend a bit of time searching out the bargains. Mine are 11 and 13 and the 11 yo is very fashion concious but my 13 yo couldnt care less so long as it is comfortable!

The one thing I have come to realise is that they really dont need loads of clothes and I have scaled down the amount of things they have. Most things can be washed and dried very quickly and they spend most of the week in school uniform anyway. I invest a bit of money in decent coats and footwear but being boys they are likely to get covered in mud or lose things so I would never go overboard.

my daughter is only 5 - she's not a reflection of me - she's a reflection of her - she chooses her own clothes and rarely matches and can often be found raiding the bags of too small favourite things before I sneak them to the charity shop or out of season things. She spent 6 weeks wearing a swimsuit over her clothes!

Or perhaps that does reflect me - it reflects that I let her be herslef and don't care what people think!
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

i've realised i spend a lot less on my DD's clothes now that she has a definite idea of what she will and won't wear. i no longer "pick stuff up" for her when I'm shopping and she's not with me, because i'm not sure she'll wear it. she doesn't care for shopping in town for hours either, so that certainly helps with the budget ;).
  • Lots as he is a baby! So far have spent approx £250 on clothes up to 6 months old, starting to stock up on 6 - 9 months and estimate will spend £150 - £250 due to everyone buying presents for B in the smaller sizes.
