Help setting up EON EcoMeter

I have just moved into a new house which has a Smart meter for electricity (we don't have gas). The Smart meter comes with a nice box called an EcoMeter (model 5262c) the smart meter is a E470, both made by Landis+Gyr.

The Ecometer only comes with a Eon booklet that tells me how to use it and the first bit of the manual says "...... Our Smart Meter Installer will have set up your SED aand linked it to your smart meters, so your ready to go" But I am pretty sure he hasn't done that at all as my ecoMeter just says "this function is not currently enabled" and from the Menu/System Info there are no meter serial number listed.

I am pretty OK with technical stuff as I work in IT so I thought this must just be a matter of linking the ecometer to the smart meter but I cant find any instructions that tell me how to do this. I have had a look at the smart meter and I cant work out how to use the 2 buttons on it, I have tried a few combinations but have ended up with a long row of Zeros ....

So can anyone help me with sorting this out? I really don't want to have to get EON to come out and do it if its a simple process.

Thanks

  • I'm assuming when you say new house you mean it had occupants before you? Not an actual brand new build? It's possible that the meter has simply reverted to being a 'dumb' meter when the old occupants moved out. The companies are still just testing the meters. You need to call eon asap to tell them you've moved in and at that point I assume they'll be able to advise you what's going on.

Sorry I couldn't be more help that just telling you to call eon.

No it really is a new build !

I will give them a call on Monday but was hoping to have a go before then as I bet its a simple thing to do if only I knew how.
  • Hi wytco0

You're right to call us about this. Don't know if you've already spoken to us but, if not, we've a dedicated team who look after all issues to do with the new Smart meters. These are the people to speak to.

Contact details are on page 14 of the booklet you refer to. Alternatively, they can be found on our website.

    It's under Existing Customers/Smart Meters/Smart Energy Display.

Sorry your unit isn't working wytco0 but hope this points you in the right direction.

Main problem with E.ON's smart meters are that the unit cost never varies and therefore you don't get a true measure of cost, based on your personal tariff. I had notification months ago that E.ON were going to update the meters remotely, but nothing changed. Typical E.ON all talk and no action.

Hmm we are with EOn and just got a letter to say they are rolling out smart meters in our area. We are trying to decide if we should opt out or not, the letter says it calculates cost based on your own personal tariff?

Does this mean we will be getting a more updated versions than dprice or are they all being updated?

I knwo in the US there has been safety concerns, but there seems to be little proof other than the fact that even low levels of EMF "effect humans". Given that we are surrounded by varying radiation-wifi phones etc I am wondering if the smart meter will make much difference.

    Hmmmmmm.

We used to have a monitor which was great and definately reduced our usage, but one of the kids managed to knock it off the side and smash the screen .

    Hi Ali

Smart metering technology is very progressive and will probably change several times before 2019.

That said, the type of meter we're currently installing is of a very high spec and will meet customer needs for a number of years.

On the safety aspect, we wouldn't install anything in a customer's property in the knowledge it would have a bad affect on their health. Our Smart Meters conform to Health Protection Agency standards and guidelines.

They all come with an energy display. These are more accurate than the monitors we used to send out. The old monitors were also restricted to electricity only whereas the Smart Monitors will show gas usage and costs too.

Hope this is of some interest Ali. Give me a shout if I can help further as happy to do so.

Also since there is yet to be an agreement for tux technology, it may need changing again. However, you could benefit from the features now. Just be aware that the meter will be "dumbed down" when you switch to work as a normal meter as other suppliers are using different technology.

Not sure if that means consumer side functions still operate and any radio element e.g. meter reading recovery, will go. Supplier pull & push facilities certainly go when you switch.

    Question for Eon Malc there.

    Hi Terry

If one of our Smart Meter customers switches to another supplier, whether their meter will remain smart depends on the systems offered by the new supplier.

They will, though, still be able to use the smart energy display.

As an industry, we're working towards making meters and systems more compatible.

If the meter doesn't stay smart, it will revert to being a standard meter.

Not sure if that answers your question Terry. Let me know if not clear and I'll go to our Smart Team experts for more detailed info.

Thanks Malc, that's does answer the question as I wasn't sure about the consumer side functions.

In terms of supplier/NHHMOP functionality, it has to be "dumbed down". Whilst you know the supplier id its going to, you don't know who the appointed NHHMOP is going to be and some suppliers have been contracting agents specially for their trials with fixed contracts. Plus suppliers only willing to conduct trials, won't accept switched customers on them as they expect the old supplier to revert them.

*Currently, the prices shown on the smart energy display have been pre-set to our standard tariff rate and are for guidance only.

Quote from the E.ON web site and the unit prices on my display haven't changed in the last year.
