I'd hold off buying one until at least 7th March 2012 as that's when the iPad 3 is slated to be announced.0

Remember if you have an iPhone or similar smartphone, it is very easy to tether your iPad to your phone and use its 3G connection for occasions where you cannot access wifi, thus eliminating the need for a 3G iPad plus new sim etc
Assuming that you're mobile provider allows this, and depending the data limit on your mobile.0
