  • I always enjoyed the old Natwest adverts. Somehow Crockett's Theme playing in the background made them appear more competent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ2IvlApot8

    More recent.

This one is the only one that I can remember actually bringing people through the door and asking about a product.

Love it or hate it, it made an impact.

It didn't it merged with Lloyds, who bailed out Halifax and as a result of saving the banking system from total colapse we the tax payer bailed the "super bank" out.

    You think?

After the government encouraged them to buy the HBOS turkey?

Do you think they really got a buzz out of having to go cap in hand for more money just to stop people losing their savings?

    Strange post.

It does make me wonder why they changed from giving interest to giving a fixed £5/month. After all, at 4%, you'd have to keep £1900 in your account to get the same deal as you get now for keeping £nil in the account (and just passing 1K through per month).

Maybe they'll change it back this year, and put a cap of say 2K to ensure they are not taken advantage of. I wonder how many accounts will get closed as a result if that happened (from people who only have the account to get the £5).

The key is what is the average balance of a current account.

No doubt that many people keep little to nothing in there and take a fiver. But if they are outweighed by the bigger balances (e.g. £5,000) the proposition is viable.

Additionally, there will be some cross-subsidisation from the £1 overdraft fees. Indeed, as the Reward proposition was built when base rates were 5.5%, my guess is that the £1 fees have given them more income than expected (or average balances have actually increased, or both) - allowing them to maintain the level of reward at £5 a month.

This sort of product will have a limited shelf life. How long that is I have no idea though. I suspect it's got a bit more in it yet, but time will tell.

I preferred the old Moneyback debit card that paid 1% on the first £10k spent. That was tax free!
