33% saving made on Auto-Eurpoe car hire

I had been trawling price comparison sites for a while trying to get the best deal on car hire in Nice at Easter.

One of the best quotes for a compact car (Focus) was through Auto Europe - £348 for 13 days. However, when I re-visited the site directly, by typing in the address (all the w's and autoeurope etc) rather than through a price comparison link, and did the same dates and times etc I was given a quote of $352.

I had defaulted onto the USA site. I filled in all details, including my country of residence as UK, and booked the car.

I checked my credit card account this morning and I have been charged £231 for the booking. A saving of £117 or just over 33% on the original quote from the same company.

Happy days! :)

Sound good. Have you checked that you have full insurance?

You need to check you are properly insured as they have a basic package and a package with insurance. I think you have the basic package as the insurance package is over $550.
  • Would the cheaper 'US Spec' price with minimal insurance + a 3rd party insurance similar to 'Insurance4CarHire' combine to make a total complete package, and still work out cheaper than the UK price? My gut is telling me it can't be that simple, as the US cover has this excluded as stock:
    • Theft Protection (TP)
    • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

I can only see the insurance4carhire having insurance to cover the excess on theft, not the theft itself, same for CDW?

    It's confusing stuff!
As an aside, going through the US site gives you options of different cars too? (I've selected France for my hire country)
And the 'complete' prices roughly equal the UK site anyway
