INSURE THE BOX be careful

Used this company for my son as he had just passed his test and got his first car. This policy cost £3000 and was about £500 less than others.
BUT it carries a limit of 6000 MILES ONLY.

I stupidly thought 6000 miles would be plenty for a years motoring, WRONG my son used his 6000 miles in 7 months as he loved being on the road so used his car lots.

So thought we had better check how much to top up miles (extra miles after the included 6000 miles) and almost died.

THEY CHARGE 0.41p PER MILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for top up

they only sell the mileage in minimum amount of 250 miles at £102, so calculate he will need about £1500 worth to end of policy.

Contacted insure the box to plead with them to do a mileage deal and the answer is NO, followed by PAY the extra top up price or we take it from you bank, debit or credit whichever will allow the funds. If the payment for the mileage is uncessful they just cancel the policy and refund none of the years funds paid.
Also if we cancel the ploicy as he used more than a reaonable amount of miles unlikely he will get any money back as well

Dont use them expecting to earn bonus miles either as its almost impossible to earn them.

So only consider if you know you will NOT GO OVER 6000 MILES or you will pay through the nose

  • How can this occur ?

With 6000 miles you have 500 every month. If you use 1000 a month, you will run out.

You do not have to wait until you run out to stop driving the car so far do you ?
  • the OP presumed it wouldnt cost much to top up the miles.

Insure the box, and all the little tracking things are cons. Ive never had a quote from them that was cheaper then elephant, aviva or LV.

I personally, would find out how the boxes work, remove it and put it in another car that will sit in a field or something, every now an then just start it up etc.

If the insusurers phone up and wonder why your car hasnt moved, just say its engine imploded and you are fixing it.

Great idea, then you pay money NOT to be insured!

It's a good job the insurers haven't thought of that trick.

    Hello All,

6001: You already knew that there is a limit of 6000 miles before you buy the insurance and they also provide the rate of top up miles in the documents as well. Also you can monitor your usage on the portal as well. So your son or you could have easily checked in advance that you are about to consume all your mileage or could have amended the usage as your son is using it just for fun.

the95th: The portal let you view all the journeys you make including mileage and the average speed etc.

The only reason I am defending because I am insured with them and so far had no problem and earning maximum bonus miles as well apart from two months where I earned 10 less. But I do not have any experience of making a claim with them and I wish I never have to.

    I'm not the op.
Just saying they might well have thought of a scenario where someone tries to remove their box, and put it on a car in a field.

But yes, I agree, budget 500 miles a month, if you do over, think about it early on.

What is the maximum bonus miles, as a matter of interest?

Good to have feedback on the box insurance.

They don't need to, do they? If the insured car was in an accident, the insurance asessors would find that there was no box in the car (which presumably is a condition of cover) so the policy would be voided.

Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

The box relays live data, so the insurers can assess how the car is driven, what time it is used, speed on corners, heavy braking, and impacts etc.
So if it's not on the car, no data will be sent, they're going to be round to check.
Or just decide to cancel. They weren't born yesterday.

I was insured with Insure The Box and unknown to myself our box developed a fault whereby it stopped transmitting certain data. They had an engineer call to fix the problem very promptly so you wouldn't get away with transferring it to another vehicle.
I had no problems adhering to the mileage restrictions but was well aware from the outset how much a top up would cost.
What irked me though was at renewal, despite being classed as 'one of their best drivers' from the box data, their premium doubled in price. Needless to say I moved on.
The concept and initial cost is good if you can comply with the mileage limit, but they do not seem competetive when renewal time comes around.

Can it detect who is driving the car?

I ask in all seriousness, my son was looking at this and I am insured on his car, so how would it know who was driving?
