O2 Defaulted Balance with NO WARNING!
Options
Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar position or has any advice on the following situation:
I was a customer with O2 to the middle of 2003 and moved to T-Mobile. My last monthly bill was paid and I did not believe I owed anythink else.
Over a year later a debt collection comany from Hull sent a rather frightening letter stating I owed them £30.00. I rang them and they said it was from O2, I thought they were scam artists. I rang O2 and the first girl I spoke to said "there was nothing on the system" so I left the situation alone thinking someone was trying it on.
Then I got a more threatening letter...
I then contacted O2 who said that I now needed to settle the matter with this company from Hull. I couldnt get a reason for the money that was supposedly owed out of O2.
I rang the debt company and told them that I wanted a letter from O2 confirming why I owed the money and then I would pay them(on the basis it was reasonable)
Then I heard nothing...
Over this Christmas period I have been looking at houses, and was credit checked as part of a mortgage application. Imagine my embarassment when told I had a defaulted balance, with a communications supplier.
I rang O2, who were unhelpful so I sent them a 3 page letter asking what had gone on and how angry I was. I got back a one paragraph response stating a number to pay up the outstanding amount.
When I rang them I was informed it was for calls and texts after my last bill but before I was cut off. As all along paying hasn't been the issue i paid, but this blot on my credit history will be with me for 6 years.
It seems a small amount but without having a credit card or loan in the past this has really affecting my credit rating.
What Can I do against O2 in this matter?
What grounds can I complain on? and How?
Can I take them to court to remove the default on the basis it was put on without giving me grounds to rectify the situation.
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Luke

I don't really know, but I'd suggest that as they hadn't billed you or contacted you earlier with notice of this, now that you've paid they should totally remove it from the credit file0

Well now I have paid it is marked as 'satisfied'.
Apparently this is better when someone credit searchs me... but ultimately it is still there!
They cant remove, and experian will only get rid of it if O2 say its a mistake!
To be honest I am just annoyed that there seems no regulation or protocol for a company like O2 to sell my debt to a random agency! and then to put a default to my name... just doesn't seem fair!0
