Audi A4 2.5 TDI - Performance

Hello,
My husband test drove an Audi A4 2.5 TDI today. The car is very nice for the age (2000 'W' with 72kmiles) but the performance was really not what he was expecting.
The engine seemed to be in limp mode - wouldnt rev past 3,000 rpm, the salesman said it was because there was hardly any fuel left (the computer said the range was 0 miles!) What I'd like to know is does the engine management on this car actually restrict performance when you are running on fumes or is it more likely to be a dead MAF? We're going back tomorrow to drive the car again with more fuel in it - see if what he says is true!
Also, does anyone know when the cambelt should be changed on the V6 TDI.
Any comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Taliwillow

I'd be wary - a diesel engine shouldn't ever run dry, apparently it can cause damage to some components...
Definietly test it with fuel this time, it was pretty dopey for the dealer to give you a car with hardly any fuel (unless they thought you'd take it and run :rotfl: )0 -
My OH drives an Audi A4 Avant 2.5 tdi quattro. He loves it. He says it is the best car on the road for stability, and the best towing car he has ever had.
If it wasn't for the towing, he would drive the ordinary A4 2.5 tdi.
But the crunch is how it feels to drive. Also check the service history, my OH won't have a car that doesn't have a full service history.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Forgot to say - cam belt 65k, so if it hasn't been changed be careful to get it fully checked out.
also, according to OH, that is quite a low mileage car - 'an Audi with 100,000 miles on the clock is just run in'I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Is it from an Audi dealer?0

Hello,
Thanks for your responses. No its not from an Audi dealer but it does have full Audi service history. They have said that if the cam belt is due for a change at 80k then they will change it for us now even thought the car only has 72k at the moment. It is at a Prestige car dealer so the car we are looking at is the cheapest one they have there.

Well, ask them to fill the tank up a bit and see if it makes any difference. If not then avoid it.Happy chappy0

All Vw group cars are now recommending cambelt changes every 40000 mile due to some faliures before 60000 as recommended by the manual. The job cost a round £400 so make sure it is done and he doesn't just say it is been donetaliwillow wrote:Hello,
