Trying to sort a friends crappy talktalk broadband out and finally got some feedback (talktalk forums seems to be the only place where you can get decent tech support).
Anyway, the gut came back with this tech-speak
"BTs DLM had you on fixed 500 for some reason."
Can anybody interprete this please?

'British Telecom's Dynamic Line Management had you on a fixed 500kKBps (0.5MBps) speed for some reason'.
It's the process by which the line speed is adjusted automatically to give the best balance between speed and stability. Supposedly takes up to 10 days once the connection is established, which is why it's not a good idea to switch your router off before bedtime. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Although a fixed speed profile is very rare to find these days. Usually they just tweak the Signal to Noise Ratio Margin (SNRM) to set the speed. (Higher SNRM = lower speed. Default setting for ADSL2+ ... up to 20/24meg ... is 6dB or 9dB).0

My S-I-L had similar problems with a very slow connection with TalkTalk even tho he was LLU'd (on their own equipment)- in the end he had to get put thru' to cancellations whereupon he was passed to Level 2 tech support - they then admitted that the exchange was "overutilised" ,he had been put on a 1Mb banded profile but within 15 minutes they had released the bottleneck and he was getting 7Mb!!!!!
I suspect a lot of people are having their connections artificially restricted by BT or the LLU suppliers because of exchange congestion!!!:(0 -
Saw this a lot when I worked for HOrange when they were changing over customers to BT WBC & IPS broadband.Nearly every time we had a slow speed fault,we had to send off to BT to reprofile a customers broadband. It's a simple thing to fix but getting hold of BT to do it is a nightmare,we could only do it by e-mail or BT Wholesale systems (depending on the product)0

Hi grumpycrab,
In short it means your line was being restricted to 0.5meg Speed
DLM is Dynamic Line Management varies the speed of the service to ensure a stable connection. Where drops occur DLM automatically adapts the line profile and speed. When the line is stable DLM increases speed to ensure the optimal connection.
