I have been shopping with tesco for as long as I can remember and have never had any bother. Today was just a normal day. I went to the Tesco cash machine, checked my balance and took a few quid out to do me for the day. I went to the tesco garage and filled the car up, went in to pay for it using my card and the teller told me it hadnt worked, she tried my card several times and then asked me to make an alternative method of payment, I reluctantly gave her the cash instead. Went and checked the bank machine 5 minutes later and it confirmed that my balance had been wiped out!!! I called the bank who confirmed tesco had in fact taken the money from my account!!! So I went to the garage who did not believe me and said there must be a problem with my funds....NOT THE CASE! I went to the main store to speak with a duty manager who told me if the money has been taken it will go to a "ghost acc" and said dont worry, we havent got the money, it will come back to you eventually! Em, who has my money then coz I aint got it?" She said go to the bank and get proof, so i drove all the way to the bank in the town to get the proof, and took the proof back to tesco. I provided them with all the proof the bank gave me and tesco STILL wouldnt give me my money back! I advised them that I needed to buy nappies and wipes and food for my daughter and that I wasnt leaving til I had my money back. Duty manager did her job and called head office, head office told her that they were to give me NOTHING and that i would have to call the store in the morning to find out if the payment was showing on the tesco system. The bank even said if tesco sent a quick fax to ask them to cancel the transaction then the bank would sort out their mess! But tesco said they didnt have a fax machine!!!!!!!!!!
In mean time I have had to call every family member I know to lend me money so my baby doesnt go without! Thanks alot Tesco!!!! Every little helps.........not today obviously!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

It's not Tesco's fault. It's the merchant - sometimes a 'ghost' authorisation does appear and can suspend your available balance if the ghost authorisation is large enough.
Tesco will probably want to leave it to the merchant to sort out - after all Tesco haven't got your money.
You're just going to have to wait for the money to clear back, which is usually 3-5 days. A pain I know, but such is life.0 -

Tesco is the merchant and they have crippled their customer financially. Sadly this is all too common now but the "such is life " attitude helps it to continue.
The op has every right to be furious.0 -

By merchant, he means the merchant bank that process transactions. Not Tesco.0 -
By merchant, he means the merchant bank that process transactions. Not Tesco.
Then he's using entirely the wrong terminology.
The banks with which we have everyday accounts are clearing banks, not merchant banks.
When we talk about the 'merchant' in consumer transactions we are talking about the person we are dealing with to purchase goods or services, not the bank that handles the transaction. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
No, he used the correct terminology. It is the merchant, short for merchant aquirer, who has probably caused this.

That's what I said.
The comment about incorrect terminology was in response to this: "By merchant, he means the merchant bank that process transactions. Not Tesco."There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

that sarcastic comment is quite offensive. the OP was in financial dire straits due to (tesco/merchant/merchant acquirer/whoever) but not due to her own volition, causing her stress and hassle and having to go to the bank to get proof when she's done nothing wrong, then had to ask round for help for nappies and wipes due to this situation. I'm not suprised she feels so angry.0
