  • Although the insurance was only £20 there is probably a high excess. Probably upwards of £500 if you want to make a claim. You need to inform the insurer though even if you don't want to claim.
  • So, I've informed the insurer.

I really dont want my mum's insurance affected - I know mine will take a beating (even if I dont claim) Is this right?.

Will my mum's be affected? it?
  • Are yet going to make a claim?

If so is it on your mothers policy?

If you bought a separate one day temp. insurance cover, then your Mum's insurance is unaffected by this incident.

But if you have been added on as a named driver to her insurance policy (for one day), then she will need to disclose the incident (whether or not you claim) to any new insurer she approaches for insurance (they usually ask for your history over the previous 3/5 years)

I mean, I've only paid £20 to be insured comprehensively for a day so how can I expect them to fix maybe £500 worth of damage?
Because that is what you've paid for and that is the risk they take.
I'm I correct in assuming that even if I dont claim - once I call my future premiums go up? I'm not overly worried about this to be honest. I just want to know if maybe by law/rules I'm meant to call them?
Legally you're required to declare any accidents when you apply for insurance. However if you've not claimed and the other party hasn't claimed then nobody actually knows.

But as you have put in a claim, you will have to put the date of the claim, that it was an at fault accident and the value of the claim when applying for future insurance.

What will happen now is the insurance company will send out their assessor to view the damage and report back. They'll then make a decision whether to repair or write off depending on the value of the car and the cost of repair. You'll then be notified what is happening.

Unless the policy specifically mentioned providing a courtesy car, you won't get one so will have to sort something else out.

    Why?

If she doesn't claim and he isn't on the policy anymore, which driver on that policy has had a claim or collision?

First thing to do is make sure you have all your documents, if they are on internet links, get them printed, even if you have to pay someone to print them.
Get the documents in a very safe place.
Then start reading them, how much is the excess ?
What were the limitations and exclusions .
what was the cover with relation to damage to own vehicle.
where you insured third party or fully comp under this temporary cover.
How much is the excess on the policy.

Then start looking at what savings you have that you can throw in, you are going to need a lot of cash and quickly.

Surprised you're not on here talking about arrestable offences the op maybe guilty of as insurance isn't your strong point this week.

The policyholder has to disclose in cases where a loss has been caused by a previous named driver.

(But if the cover for the day was provided quite separately to the OP from his Mum's policy, then she need not disclose it)

    Next things:
Who owns mums car ? Is it on finance or did she buy it outright.
If it is on finance did you take out gap insurance as it will be worth considerable less than its insurance value, gap insurance covers this loss and it can be substantial.
Next: expect the other party to make a claim once "those in charge get wind", what the driver said is worth NOTHING ! Did you take photos of this no damage ?
