    So if the relative gave permission for this to be done, who is the OP attempting to defraud then? The relative is happy for the monies to be paid to the stepson regardless of his name. Altering the amount is of course fraudulent but altering a surname so that the cheque is still made out to the same person, I can't see how that is fraudulent but await the influx of replies telling me that it is!

    It is defined as fraud - even if no one 'suffers'

    However, perhaps you missed the bit where it appears this is not a personal cheque at all but that the bank in Eire issued what sounds like a bankers draft in Sterling.. for which they would have made a charge and are probably machine generated anyway - the Bank in Ireland would certainly notice that one of its 'own'/branch cheques/drafts had been tampered with..

    Well it is still hand written but you are write that it is effectively a banker's draft so I don't think it is worth changing everything on it. Mind you it is frustrating though.

    They won't it is illegal to pay a cheque into an account unless the name matches.
