Step Son Cheque

Just wondering whether someone can give me some advice, my step son has just recieved a cheque for his birthday made out to him with my surname not his legal surname.
He has an account with Nationwide where myself and my wife look after the account but nationwide say they won't accept the cheque because it is not made out in his name.
He is only eight and seems a bit of a hassle so just wondered if anyone knew anyway around this problem.
Thanks in advance

If you don't want the person who sent the cheque to know you have different names, tell them he doesn't have a bank account yet and could they re-write one in your name and you'll give him the cash. You could cross through the incorrect surname and write the correct one above it, just initial the change wuth the initials of whoever wrote the cheque. If they query it you can show them that the first name is your name and the second name is your wife's, they can then see it as a genuine change rather than an attempt at fraud, tell them you gave the cheque back to the person who gave it to your stepson and they changed it.
I doubt they would query it if the amount it is for were relatively small, if it's a high value cheque then they probably would.0 -
Good plan I might try that but the problem I have is that the cheque is from his family in Ireland and they have paid for their bank to issue a sterling cheque so do you think I could still get away with changing it?0

Ask the family in Ireland if they'd mind sending a new one.Touch my food ... Feel my fork!0

Explain the situation to NW and ask if they will let you pay the cheque into the existing account. If they wont, ask if you can open another account with your surname.
Altering the cheque yourself could make things extremely awkward so dont do it.God save the King!

I wouldnt start altering cheques and initialing them. Sorry but that is bad advice.
Do what moorlandbanks said tell them he doesnt have a bank account yet or just be honest.0 -
Thanks for the advice so far I will go into nationwide tomorrow and explain the circumstances, hopefully they will see sense and let me bank the cheque on this occasion.0

How much is the cheque for?0

It is for £50, sent for his birthday. I would like to think Nationwide will see sense.0
