Well, I cannot understand your hostile undertone. Please read my post more carefully. It was Royal Mail on the phone who told me to request a refund from the post office yesterday!

Actually, are all phone calls recorded? I have the exact time and date when I called Royal Mail. Can I request to retrieve the record? That would prove that I have been given wrong information by Royal Mail...

    to what end
you got given the wrong information
why would you think you wouldnt need to pay postage?
Post Offices dont refund postage. that is done through RM

    and they did
the item got as far as it could
DP have deemed an issue with the address and rendered it undeliverable
so the service went as far as it could
RM got it back and returned it to the sender
what would you suggest they did?

So it is not just me who finds ex-postie's posts rude. :)

OP, did the parcel eventually get to you?

    ex-postie's posts are extremely rude.

The parcel never got to me (status as of today, 28 March 2012)! The content of the parcel was worth £67 and the postage £9, so I spent about £76.

Since I sent the parcel as Airmail and not Airsure mail I'm not sure about the compensation. According to Royal Mail (I'm really annoyed with them because they gave me wrong information on the phone - I wouldn't have let the parcel reposted if they didn't tell me to do so), they only pay
Airmail (inc. Airletters and airmail packs)
Actual loss up to 100 x 1st Class letter stamps at the first weight step or the market value, whichever is the lower. No Consequential Loss available. Certificate of posting required. Apply within 6 months from posting.
A 1st Class letter stamps is 46p which means the maximum they pay is
£46. But I very much doubt that Royal Mail will pay anything because they would claim it wasn't their fault:
Unfortunately we can’t accept claims where the problems were caused by another postal operator or other third party.

By now (23 February), my friend has contacted me saying that the parcel was returned to him and the reason was "unknown address": the parcel left the UK, arrived in Germany and got returned to the UK because of an "unknown address".

However, the address he put on the parcel *IS* correct!

    Clearly Deutsche Post think otherwise.

You should have phoned Deutsche Post.

They apologized and said that most likely German post made a mistake.

There you go, I told you that you should have phoned Deutsche Post.

Can someone help me or give any advice of how to deal with this?!

You need to contact Deutsche Post to work out what the problem is.
