Upgrading sky box

Hi we currently have Sky + in the front room and a standard (very old) Sky box in the bedroom, which is a multiroom box.

We would like to upgrade the standard Sky box to a Sky + box (keeping the multiroom).

What is the cheapest way of doing this?

We have a spare Sky + box someone gave to us, can we use this with the existing card thats in the standard box? If so can we rig it up ourselves in the bedroom or do we have to get someone out to do it for us?

Also for future reference can we add the new FreeView boxes (which is enabled to record, rewind and pause live TV) to the spare bedroom?

Nothing wrong with connecting it up yourselves. You will more than likely need Sky to pair your viewing card with the box.
I expect you only have 1x sat cable coming from the dish to this box?

Which you may want to think about if you want 2x cables, the same way you have to your main sky+ box as you'll only be able to record the channel you are watching and not 2 different channels at the same time. Depends if this will be an issue? If you do want this, check you have a spare connection on the LNB on the dish for the extra cable or a new LNB will be required.

Cable and LNB's are both quite cheap these days:)

To use a Freeview PVR (they're not new) in the spare bedroom, you will require an external aerial and cable connection.
Freeview is a terrestial service via an aerial-nothing to do with Sky.

Thanks, not attempted to do anything myself before with Sky but wanting where possible to save money and time by avoiding having to call someone out to do it for me if possible.

Therefore can you tell me how / where I check for the LNB connection and what type of cable I require please?

the LNB is the "thingy" on the end of the arm on your dish. If your dish is inaccessible then you may have problems. LNBs come in different sizes, but probably you have a quad LNB which has 4 possible connections, 2 for the Sky+ box, 1 for the one in the bedroom and 1 spare unless you have 1 in the kitchen also. If you have access to the LNB then you need to run an extra cable from the LNB to you box in the bedroom. If it were me I would but a HD Sky+ from Ebay for around £30 and move my other sky+ box to the bedroom. Without paying extra you would not receive Sky HD channels but you would get BBC HD, ITV1 HD, CH4 HD CH5 HD and another couple

WF100 is good enough cable for your requirements with F connectors.

Plenty of options on Ebay for length assuming, as stated above, you can safely get to the dish.

Hmmmm didnt even consider I would have to access the dish itself which is located on the chimney ontop of the bungalow's roof!

Hubby hates heights and I wont do it as I hate ladders!

Looks like we will end up shelling out after all.

I have been on the Sky website to try and find out how much it would cost to get the upgrade to a Sky+ box (non HD) but it is very confusing.

I already have Multiroom with an old standard Sky box and all I want to do is change this box to a Sky+ box (non HD) keeping the Multiroom subscription on it.

Can anyone tell me how much this would cost to do via Sky please as their website says first multiroom Sky+ box is free for the box and £60 installation. But nothing about just upgrading the box when I already have Multiroom.

If the dish is on the chimney they wont be installing it at all, you will need to get an independent in to do the work, at your cost, £65+

It was a an istaller via Sky who fitted it to the chimney of the bungalow when we moved here so I don't understand why not?
