Low body temperature - causes??

One Doctor that I use to see regulary spotted a lump in my throat that turned out to be a Goitre but I was not perscribed any thyroxine for another 5 years later due to the blood tests showing only borderline results. The past 2 years I have now gained 3000 antibodies attacking my thyroid with huge weight increase for the 1st time in my life, but just on 100mg thyroxine still. Hashimotos they call this type of hypothyroidism(which always makes Mr Old laugh...mind you he laughs at most things luckily). The options are very limited for treatment in the UK and I would say it is not always a straightforward condition/disease to keep balanced....although it is very very common. Mrs Happy0

Funnily enough I've been looking at this over the last few weeks, as like the OP I have a very low basal temp according to the Barnes test. I've also been suffering from a lot of symptoms for many years, and have approached my GP's practice a few times about it...............the latest was this morning. Unlike the OP I don't have the pleasure of a proactive GP, all the ones left in the practice are patronising and don't listen - all I got this morning was 'you have under 10 minutes, what is your main objective today?':rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:My understanding is that the test for thyroid levels is not very sensitive or accurate, so people are quite often misdiagnosed. If so, it could be that you do have a low thyroid level and it has been missed. Anyone else have an opinion on that?
Anyway moving on, I have found a lot of useful and helpful info on the following sites;
thyroid-disease.org
thyroiduk.org
house of commons
What I've found is that blood tests are notoriously misdiagnosed as it only looks at one aspect, one site suggested 9 out of 10 sufferers are missed, especially when it comes to looking at the best indicator rT3, as most labs don't test for it. Anyway you can read up on it all on thyroid uk.
The saliva test is a better indicator, alongwith the Barnes Temp Test neither of which my GP this morning was interested in, and nor my case history...................although was interested when I suggested we test for diabetes also, but never asked about my family history!!!

Hi,
I stopped trying to lose weight over winter because I kept getting too cold, particularly in my extremities. Once I got cold I found it hard to warm up, even in a warm room. As soon as I started eating more again my body coped with the cold much better.
I've also got a friend who gets migraines when she hasn't eaten much that day. so both problems could be related to the amount and type of food you eat.
I hope this helps0 -
Hi,
I had thyroid problem when I was at school (16 yrs ago), I cant ever rememeber if it was under or over but my symptoms were always feeling cold in the summer or in a warm house, lack of concentration (the teachers hadto be informed), tired, weight gain. I was on Thyroxine and was told I would be on it for life but came off it a few years later.
I still have the lack of concentration, cold, weight gain etc but have put that all down to being female :rotfl:
Seriously I would have your thyroid checked again, they might also check for annemia which can cause fatigue.
I noticed you said you have chrones disease, I have just had a section of my small bowel removed 6 weeks ago and am waiting for the biopsy to come back to confirm its Chrones. I feel great now apart from a huge scar down from the belly button, only I have diorreah quite often. Ive tried to work out if its certain foods but as of yet I havent seen anyone since my op to get diet advice etc.
Is there any advice you can give ? I can put up with the trots if thats all i'll have to deal with.
I hope the doc sorts you out soon!Just owe Dad £2500 for a new car

If you're put on thyroxine it's normally for life, you should be tested again to see if you still need it. It's very important to keep your levels correct as it affects every single system in your body including your heartbeat. I've got Hashimoto's too but I don't find it very funny with all the weight gain that goes with it!0
