Using own car instead of company car - 'hire car insurance'?

Hi all
I've recently opted out of my company car scheme and use my own, claiming expenses.
The scheme dictates that if the car breaks down and I need to hire a car, I need to fund that.
Are there any companies that offer any type of insurance to cover for this eventuality (when not caused by an accident)?
Thanks in advance
Simon:)

You're mad. Make sure you're getting the 45p a mile and that still won't cover your costs.
If you had a company car, I expect you do a fair bit of business mileage, not just visiting another site or the odd client. If this is the case, then you need proper business insurance and not just the add on business use for personal policies.0 -
i agree Road Hog
i think AA RAC do a break down cover that give you
- a hire car for up to three days
- or costs of an overnight hotel stay
- or return travel by public transport.
but your looking a business use and that means business cover ,the above is for an option on normal coverthere or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -

Thanks guys.
I am £600+ per month better off using my own car - including taking into account deprecation (based on the crap ppm I get from my company).... but thanks for the madness accusations! My base is at home and I do 30k miles per year...
I am comfortable with my vehicle insurance (accidents) - I am looking for something to protect against breakdowns...0 -
Is £600 a month not enough to cover that?
Negotiate a deal with a hire company but for occasional use i doubt they will be

Guys, seriously, a simple 'no, we don't know' would have done (or not reply!)

Suprised you can make it £600pm profit even on 30k paid miles,
love to see the numbers.
Anyway running a reliable car it should be rare occurance so I would look at the DIY/self insure solution.
Top notch recovery with take your car home and deliver you to your destination.
Back up with car hire that deliver/collect.
Will need on-line accounts and mobile internet to make it happen while on the move.
one day one way is available around £50+ for that emergency
Then do a deal with a local, when I started hiring regularly(years ago) I was getting any car they could not re-rent for the day at the lowest price.
And/Alternatively make sure the garage you use will provide a courtesy car while it is being fixed/off the road.
exactly how much cover you need depends on how immediate the need to stay on the road is.
what cover do you get with the company car option, that should be as much as you need to duplicate0 -

The crap ppm you get is the HMRC rate for company car owners. Anything above that and you pay tax on it.

Thanks....
I am c£600 better off based on the allowance I get, the ppm paid and an excellent MPG from the car(s) I've chosen since opting out , the BIK reduction (Little choice on cars within the company scheme - got to take a fuel card - and I work from home. Every mile I do is business pretty much).
In 10 years I've never been without a car due to breakdown or accident - and doubt I ever will but am trying to plan a contingency.
Looks like there aren't any insurance type policies to cover for this - but a recent email from our HR director made it clear that while company car drivers get replacement cars through the leasing company, anyone who has opted out need to fend for themselves. Just got me thinking...
Looks like if it does happen, as suggested, just a case of shopping around - but ideally making sure the garage will supply a courtesy car.
Appreciate your response...0
