  • I am not a qualified registered financial advisor, and therefore it would be illegal for me to advise you!

However, you need to answer some questions for yourself first, such as

Are you looking for income or capital growth or a bit of both?
Do you have any debts which ought to be cleared first?
Would you need access to the money or how long would you be happy locking it up for?
What level of risk are you prepared to take?

These and many more are the questions a professional would ask you before giving recommendations.
  • I would probably be able to tie it up for 2 years.
I am looking for growth and have a medium to to low risk outlook
  • Investing in equities is usually considered to be a long-term commitment (5 years plus) as you might need the money back when it is worth less than the original sum.

If it were my £100000, and I needed it after 2 years, and I was risk averse, I would be maxing out mine and my wife's cash ISAs then looking at the best buy tables for 2-year fixes.
My Debt Free Diary I owe:
    July 16 £19700 Nov 16 £18002
    Aug 16 £19519 Dec 16 £17708
    Sep 16 £18780 Jan 17 £17082
    Oct 16 £17873
  • I also have no debt and own property worth between £370,000 and £400,000

You have no debt- not even a mtg? If you stil had a mtg it might be worth paying some of it down, if the rate was higher than you would get in savings.

But really, with just a 2 year horizon and low risk you are stuck with cash investments and I agree with the advice in post 4.

I myself, am not risk averse, and even medium risk I would be happy to put some of it in a S&S ISA in some high divend payers myself- maybe 10K of it- 5K for each of you in thei year's S&S ISA allowance.

As for the Cash ISAs. unless you have other cahs savings I would put this years amt in easy access to keep over 10K of it for emergency use.

So you really may or may not spend £100,000 sometime in the next two years??? Sounds strange, but if that is the case then you have no choice but to go for the highest return after tax bank deposit account you can find.

Suggest you work out how much you need in the next 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, and sometime later. Each time period requires a different savings/investment solution.

What are you planning to spend your £100k on in 2 years? Or are you one of these people that keeps working in 2 year timescales but will find themselves 20 years later still with the money working on 2 year timescales?

  • Sorry, I did not say I was Planning to spend it in the next 2 years.
I have a well paid job just now, but that may not last

Even if the worst happens and you lose your job is it likely you really need access to £100,000?

The point is that if the answer is yes you have no option but relatively poorly performing bank deposit accounts , the interest of course being subject to tax at your current marginal rate. If you can think it through a bit you may be able to invest some fraction of the £100,000 in ways that should give you a much better return tax free.

stick it in a buy to let or two.
Property will no do worse than shares over time and you are not making FA rich in the process.
