Will a pharmacist organise medication and how?

Ask a different GP. Some GPs have strange ideas/views on things, you might find that a different one is supportive of the idea.

If I was on 30 tablets a day I'd find it very helpful to be able to get them pre-organised / sorted by the pharmacist.

I might do, but my GP is usually really good so I'm loathed to see anyone else because on paper my health is pretty standard but my GP knows things aren't that simple for me. I will go to any GP at my surgery if I've got something wrong which isn't related to my long term health problems, but for something that is then I only go to one person.
  • Be aware some pharmacies call them dosette boxes/blister dosette boxes. Also even if a doctor will refuse to do prescriptions as 4x7 most pharmacies will still do a dosette box as they will hold onto the remaining tablets. At least that is what I have been told in my training.

Also these are fab if you have a range of medication because you arn't double packing them. If you take them out of the original packaging and then put them into your own dosette style box you now have no idea what the tablet is. These boxes contain info stickers like you get on your prescribed medication. They are good if she is rushed into hospital too because you can just grab one box and all her medication is listed, great in an emergency.

I have only just came into contact with them through a change of carrer and they are amazing, especially if the person using them has mobility/hand disabilitys. One blister pack per day/per sitting and all there medication is taken, not faffing with 10-15 boxes. Lloyds ones are better as the compartments are bigger, I don't think Boots smaller ones are very good imo, unless you only have 5 tablets.
  • That's really interesting, I will ask at both Boots and Lloyds when I am next in town. I will also ask at the independant pharmacy I currently get my medication from.
  • I've checked with my mum and she definitely didn't have to see her doctor to get her medication in blister packs. The packs are disposable and each day can be torn off (for example, if you are going out for the day). These are from Lloyds and all she needed to do was have a chat with the pharmacist, who then sorted everything out for her.

My daughter is a care worker and at one of the places she works, they have a similar system, but the tablets are in plastic 'cassettes', which are not disposable. Each month, when new medication is delivered, the empty cassettes are collected. She isn't sure which pharmacy is the one that delivers to these clients though.
  • I have a similar problem, made worse with Morphine (MST) & Oramorph. On that stuff I can't work anything out.

So i have it typed out and tick off when I take them + I have another sheet to record the amount of Morphine taken and when.

It does create problems but it is 2nd nature now - tablets - record!!
  • apparently you can even get them for liquid meds now. im sure i saw a poster in lloyds one day.

i would love my tablets in a disposable tray all set out for me. i take over 30 tablets aday and thats not including any vitamins. i have a reusable dosset box but the tabs dont always fit in right and then i struggle to get them out so just as hard as talking them out of the packets.

i have to get my husband to open all the packets and then sort them out. id even pay the chemist to do it for me.

For some reason Lloyds have dispensed mum's meds this way this time, only they've put some of her tablets in the wrong places, and included the two drugs she said she didn't need this time.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • Just thought I'd update quickly (too ill to go in to detail now), Lloyds Pharmacy will package medication without the special prescription from the GP. Hurrah!
