New Plaster HELP

We had our walls skimmed after taking the dado railing off!! They are now pink colour and I think ready to plaster.... we have been advised to water down the white paint first and paint 2 x coats, but how long is it before I can put Dulux Light and space on top of the white colour???? Any advice greatly recieved!!!

do a 60/40 watered down coat onto the plaster after approximately a week. Then wait for this to dry according to your can of paint (maybe 4hrs) then apply the new light adn space paint.

We were always advised to paint a coat of watered down PVA to new plaster - it helps the paint to stick.

PVA seals the plaster and stops sepage into the plaster so you get a better finish!

Try as much as you like its seemingly impossible to prevent this PVA nonsense keep coming back time after time after time. Its such bad advice however well intentioned the advisor is in giving it.

PVA doesn't seal the plaster it dries on the surface it doesn't penetrate. So when you paint it (running the risk of the PVA going live again at the same time) all you end up with is a layer of paint on a thin layer of PVA neither of which are actually properly adhered to the wall.

A mist coat does seal the plaster because it penetrates and the reason you want it to seal the plaster is to prevent the water being sucked out of the following coats of paint too rapidly leading to a carp result.

Sorry to burst the PVA bubble (again) but I'm afraid it really is
    abject nonsense.

    Cheers

The water/paint mix you use for a mist coat entirely depends on the paint in question. Thin as gnats sheds own brand matt white can be used almost neat but a thicker trade spec paint might need a 30/70 ratio, The skim will be paintable in 24 hours if you are in a hurry, 48 if not and you can apply your following coats as son as its dry - which the first bit you did will be as soon as you have finished the last bit. Thin your first coat of the finish paint by 10% and then apply the second coat neat.

also the light and space paint is another of dulux methods of making you buy more expensive paint that normal trade emulsion would do instead ,

We use Wickes Trade Paint for New Plaster as a basecoat on fresh plaster and as it's so cheap in 10L tubs we don't water it down. Having used it successfully on new plaster we now use it on any walls as it makes a great basecoat and the paint on top doesn't bleed into the plaster and looks nice and even. This is really useful when using expensive paint like Farrow and Ball or Zoffany. It also makes cheaper paint look better.
