I suggest you try to resolve one problem at a time, or you will tie yourself up in knots.
Have you managed to get the laptop connecting to the router/internet (wireless or ethernet) yet?How do I add a signature?0 -
Then let's get that sorted before moving to another problem.
To save me reading everything back from the top, please:- tell me the make and model of the XP laptop, and the make/model of router. Also has this laptop been used with this router before?
- explain exactly what happens when you attempt to connect the XP laptop via WiFi (please include the full text of any errors)
- what happens when you attempt to connect it using an ethernet cable.
How do I add a signature?0 -
ok, on the XP machine, right-click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager.
Are there any yellow&black triangles next to any of the devices, and if so, which ones ??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

Hi GunJack
Yes there is 2 yellow question marks and one yellow triangle…they are under network Adapters
Triangle is unknown, then question mark is Other device and the other yellow question mark is Modem device on high definition Audio Bus.
Thanks for help, I think it is going to take me a long time to connect.0 -
Sorry my bad, I presumed the XP machine was a laptop. As it's a desktop, do you know that it definitely has a wireless card? You should see a small antenna sticking out of the back if there is one.
From the answer you've given to GunJack's question, it looks like the drivers for the ethernet adapter are missing or not installed correctly.
Are there any other entries under Network adapters that do not have ? or ! against them?
The original drivers will be on that Dell Utility and Drivers CD. Insert the CD, let it install the Driver utility, then run it. If it doesn't automatically detect your model number, select it from the list, then select the network adapter. It should copy the drivers to your hard disk and then automatically install them. How do I add a signature?0 -

Thanks for that help, I should have said in my last message that the error say 678 when it does not make the correction.
There is no antenna on the back of the computer. I will try do as you suggest with the CD.
Will let you know if it works.

OK so it doesn't look like it has an internal wifi card, and you haven't said anything about it having a wireless dongle, so that suggests it doesn't have wireless at all.
Edit
How to fix error 678
