TRVs

I am thinking of putting TRVs on all my radiators, I have only them on 2 at the minute. All my radiators comes from vertical pipes from the floor. There is a whole range of them in B and Q for example that range in price from 7 to well over 30 quid each.

I just want to be able to control temperature of each radiator so does it matter if i go for a cheapest one saying they all do the same thing?

  • they all basically do the same job, some are better than other, some have wax inside while some have liquid to control the temp, i use danfoss ones ras-c, the drayton trv4 are normally the most expensive but they are also are the nicest looking, remember you can't fit one to the rad where your room stat is as the rad needs to control the stat & it can't if it's being controlled by the trv

    Buy cheap, buy twice...

I have cheap Altech TRV's of 7 only 2 work properly after 3 years (but its a rented house). Try eBay for danfoss or peglar valves.

If that is why you are planning to fit TRV's then save your money, because TRV's do not control the temperature of each radiator.

talk about nit picking, i think we all know that the op wants to control the room temp & not the rad temp durr

I want to be able to turn rads on and off and down low etc according to the temperature outside as I wont want to be running rads in summer to heat water for a bath so saving oil etc At min its awkward to change them and sometimes they leak water when I do so think would be a good move, 7 rads in total to do

Many people haven't got a clue what TRV's actually do - you are making assumptions!

No you are nit picking, I do agree that some people are not sure what they really do, but as the op already has two trv's fitted I guess he knows what they do & how they work, trv's react to the temp around them & then turn the individual rad off, they don't change the temp of the rad itself, which had you posted that explanation then that would have been helpful instead of posting what you did.

You should have separate timers for the Hot water and heating, so that in the summer the heating is just off and the TRV's are not used.

I read the same in one of my books. The plumbers who laid new CH pipes for me put a TRV on the hall radiator which is a few feet from the thermostat, which they put in.

Several plumbers of my acquaintance detest TRV's and won't have them in their own homes.

They are required to fit them (another nice little earner for the government, you notice), but consider them a nonsense.

I agree their not much use as they will only work if the boiler is "Firing" all the time, which of course it aint, and in the main room you will have them at max anyway.

Then you should sort your ptogrammer/timer issues out rather than faff about with TRVs.
