Pet Insurance - Labrador or Labrador Retriever????

Hello

Had a quick search of forums and couldn't find this topic raised.

I am trying to insure my Labrador Retriever, which should be simple enough!

However, the drop-down menu of pedigree breeds on the insurance site gives 2 options: Labradors, and Labrador Retriever. Well I thought they were the same thing! Searches on the internet suggest the same.

BUT, when I choose Labrador Retriever, the price per month is HIGHER than if I choose Labrador. WHY??????

My dog's certificate says he is a Retriever (Labrador) but I don't want to have to pay higher just because of some wording! And if I choose Labrador, I bet they will refuse a claim based on that.

I have send an email to the company (pet-insurance dot co dot uk) asking to explain. But they are not the only pet insurance company with both options.

Has anyone come across this or can explain the difference?
:doh:

I will update if I hear back from them.

    They probably payout more in claims for retrievers than they pay for straight labradors.

    Mongrels will pay considerably less

    But Labradors are Labrador Retrievers so it doesn't make sense.

    Let us know their response because that's just odd!

    No such thing...labrador is shortened name for labrador retriever!

  • Means that people who describe their dog as a labrador claim less than those who call it a labrador retriever. Is there an option for "Retriever" by itself? How much does that cost?

    Do not expect the insurance company to know anything about dogs. Pet insurance is about paying claims not caring about dogs. They'll have gotten a big list of breeds off Wikipedia, slotted the claims into that list, and then used Excel to come up with a price. The guy who does this will have no idea that Labrador and Labrador Retriever actually mean the same thing.
  • Yes Retriever is also on the list, and the price is different again :shocked:

    So....
    Labrador = cheapest
    Retriever = middle
    Labrador Retriever = most expensive

    It's the weirdest thing.

    I hear what you're saying - they will probably have no idea of the breeds listed. It seems to be a generic list used by all the insurance companies. I am just worried they will refuse a claim if I pick the wrong one. But I also don't see how they can argue he is not a "Labrador" :mad:

    Labrador = pet
    retriever = pet used for odd bit of work
    Labrador Retriever = working dog only.

  • I have received a reply from the insurer:

    We class Labrador Retrievers as Gun Dogs and Labradors as house pets hence the difference in premium.

    I wonder how many people do not realise this distinction and end up paying more for their policy.

    Thank you for all your replies.

    Bit daft isn't it!!!! Maybe they should just have an additional question asking whether each dog is a working one rather than splitting up the breed name and being daft.

    Do they do the same for other retrievers?

  • I agree. They should ask if the dog is a working dog first and then list the breeds accordingly.

    There are other examples of Retrievers with multiple listings e.g. Golden Retriever and just Retriever on its own, with difference in price with this particular insurer.

    Some insurers quote the same price for all types of Retrievers as standard but it's definitely worth checking the prices don't differ between each choice of one type.

    Do yourself a favour and give pet-insurance.co.uk the big swerve as the Insurer is E&L who you really really do not want to be your Insurer.

    Nasty nasty Insurer
