Hungary To UK For Funeral - Cheapest Way?

I have a friend who's brother just passed away. The funeral is on the 20th February 2012, and is an all day affair.

I need to find the cheapest way to get my friend to the UK, as he has no money and his family are funding the trip between them. The funeral is in Hull, Yorkshire, and he has to get back to Budapest again afterwards the next day or whatever.

I have looked on flight sites, but I don't really understand it, as I am not a traveller myself, and haven't the foggiest about all this stuff. I don't even know if flying is the cheapest method. He doesn't mind if he is in transit all day, just that he gets to the UK in time for the funeral.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry to hear of your friend's loss.

Unfortunately Hungarian airline Malev has recently gone out of business which in the short term has increased demand on other airlines who fly to/from Budapest and there has probably been price rises.

Klm fly Budapest-Amsterdam-Humberside airport, perhaps call them to see if they offer compassionate fares.

Otherwise perhaps call BA and ask if they have a compassionate fare available.

Looks like Ryanair to Stansted is the cheapest flight but you would have to factor in how you get to Hull and back (National Express?)

Jet2 fly to Leeds/Bradford which may make the connection to Hull easier.

    Well by bus:

    http://berletelin.volanbusz.hu/ticket/wrd/run/ticmain?lang=en

it's a little over £100 return to London - then there's the coach from London to Hull and back which will be another £40-50

Flying on Wizzair to Luton looks around the same price and a lot faster and more choice. Easyjet are slightly more.

Oh my! I never thought it would be so expensive!

I friend just emailed me a link called edreams.co.uk, who said they had return flights for £46.80, going from budapest to stanstead, and then Luton to Budapest, so I worked out that bit.... but the bit I'm having trouble with is the bit that returns - which goes from Hull to Luton Airport. The price just goes up and up! I'm not sure the family would be able to cover it if it get's more much expensive.

Budapest to Stanstead - leave 6:30am arrives in stanstead at 8am.

    Stanstead to Victoria - leave 9am - arrives 10:45am = £7.50

    Victoria to Hull - leaves 1pm - arrives 7pm - £10.50

TOTAL - 64.80 (without Hull to Luton leg)

Im stunned at the prices. Just goes to show, that while money can't buy you happiness, it sure can make life a whole lot easier.

I shall keep checking this thread, but thank you sooo much for all your help. I will look up those compassionate fares too. I'm off to check those links.

    Thank you so much, everyone!

you may find the compassionate fares are more expensive, they tend to offer flexibility but are not very cheap tickets usually (but cheaper than buying a regular fully flexible ticket)

Trains for Hull leave from Kings Cross not Victoria, cheapest way to get to Kings Cross from Stansted (note spelling) is to take Easybus to Baker Street then Tube to Kings Cross.

But if you are heading to Hull it might be cheaper overall to book the train for Stansted to Hull via Peterborough (ie avoiding London)

Jinny, you mentioned an agent called eDreams. I want you to know that I have read many negative reviews of this agency on-line. No, I don't have any direct experience, but on this sad occasion you really don't want your brother to get stuck half-way across Europe because his tickets weren't issued properly...
