Iphone stolen today :( Can the thief access the data on it??

My girlfriend upgraded her phone last week and was super chuffed with her new Iphone 4S.

She's an estate agent and today they had three Romanian women in asking about rentals. It seems they distracted my Gf and her colleague because as soon as they left she discovered that her phone had been pinched off her desk!!

Granted this isn't the best place to keep it however its a very easy mistake to make.

As soon as she realised it was gone she called it however it had been turned off. The phone is protected by a pass code lock.

My question is..... Can the thieving s**** access any of her data? Im pretty sure the phone can be plugged into a PC and the pass code removed however we are unsure if any of the content will remain viewable?

She immediately reported it to the Police and O2 as being stolen and apparently O2 are blocking the phone. Does this render an Iphone useless or can it still be used again?

Luckily it is insured with her bank however the excess is £100 still!

Thanks in advance for any help

If they can work out her pass code then yes they can see all what's on the phone

Even if O2 block the phone it won't stop them from seeing any thing on the phone it just stops them from using it like ring out or text

But she as done every thing she can in the police and O2.

Even I don't know the passcode so hopefully its a no!!

Can they now restore the phone and use it even though she's blocked it?

I'm just hoping her insurance company play ball, she was talking to these people at her desk when one of them swooped it without her seeing- hope they dont' class that as being unattended.

    God i'm seething!!

Got this on mine and didnt think to ask her if she did as she was still busy playing with it! After it was pinched I did and sadly it was a no. As it was turned off so quickly im pretty sure this wouldnt work anyway in this case?

These people obviously know what they're doing!!

If your g/f had registered her phone via itunes I think she can use this app? If you have the app on your phone, she can login with her apple Id and it might be able to locate her phone, at the very least I think you can remote wipe it? (Sorry not sure as I've only had my 4S a couple of days and still finding my way round it)

If its blocked the only thing they will be able to do is use it as a iPod
That's saying if they can get past her code Hopefully they can't
They shouldn't be able to restore it as the ime number is registered to iTune's.

  • They proberly wont be intrested in the data on the phone and iphone 4 can be factory reset and a new itunes account set up on it.The phone wont be able to be used on any uk networks but once out of the uk it will work abroad which is why phonw theft will sill stay high untill theres a world wide deal on blocking all stolen phones.

I very much doubt that your insurers will pay up if she left it on the desk out of her sight, even momentarily. In their eyes that's akin to going out and leaving your front door unlocked.

Really? It can be used abroad? I didn't know that.

When my brothers phone got stolen, we called o2 & they used the IMEI number to block the phone. They said that this would render the phone completely useless. They CLAIMED that your backstreet shops wont attempt to unlock it, but that it can be done. Doing so is illegal.

That's what we were told anyhow.

I hope we're not talking about sensitive photographs here (sorry if a bit too forward for you, but i hope it's nothing like that). With these being foreign folk & seemingly good at what they do & based on what has been said about using abroad, i'd imagine that'd be their plan.

Unfortunately i think you're right & that she'll be quite lucky to get a pay out.
It's going a bit far, but it's almost like having it on the table with big neon signs saying "i'm about to turn away, take this" with a big arrow pointing to it. I'd be leaning towards the insurance folk saying it's the OP's good lady's own fault, unfortunately.
When at work, i & my gf always have our phones either in a bag or a pocket, on our person.

The IMEI no. can be changed. The process is illegal here and elsewhere of course.
