Swapping a Wrecked Ford Fiesta Zetec Engine - Compatible?

Hi All,

The engine of my 2001 1.25 Ford Fiesta has been badly damaged by overheating and I've been told it will be cheaper and easier to replace the whole engine with a working one that can be bought from a scrap yard for about £150 and installed for £150.

the exact engine type is a 1.25 Ford Zetec SE which has the engine code DHA. I've found a few scrap dealers that have the same engine size, year and cylinder size, but the engine code is slightly different being DHC and DHF. Are these engines compatible with my car?

I've taken advice from my mechanic and no-one seems to know what the differences are with these engines and if they are interchangable. Obviously I don't want to be stuck with an engine I can't fit - does anyone know?

Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Contact Ford UK and see if they state these are all compatible it could just be the fact that they are of different production lines etc and nothing more.

Typing in ford engine code DHC in Google takes you straight to the Ford Owners Club where almost the same question was asked a year ago, answer was

The zetec -se sefi 1.25 was used from 11/95-02/02

    the codes were

    DHA
    DHB
    DHC
    DHD

these were all EEC V emissions

    they then used
    DHE
    DHF
    DHG

    these were SIM19 emissions.

Possibly all of the same emissions group may be interchangable, but wiring and sensors may be different, I would ask on the Ford Owners Club Website

one zetec engine had the airbox just behind the slam panel and usually has air conditioning pump attached
tother zetec had airbox at the nearside?
be very careful buying s/h as they can sound and tick over lovely but once warm smoke really badly
im pretty sure you had to get the right lump
  • Thanks for all your help.

One detail I found out from a scrap dealer is that the rocker cover on the DHC engine was silver while mine (DHA) was black.

    Any help?

very different see ,ignore the fact the second picture is a mk 4 by the way
  • I've found a 1.25 Zetec with the same engine code as my old car (DHA) on eBay, but it is from an automatic. Compatible?

I also read that a DHC engine put into a 'DHA' car will not work because the engine managment system (computer) is calibrated differently.

    Bah!

    Thanks again for your advice.

Yes all the same, (or at least all would work even if they look a bit different) and if you wanted a bigger engine a 1.6 or 1.7 from a Puma could also be fitted.

Only in so much as one has a plastic cover on. Take off the cover and you'll find it probably looks similar.

TBH I'd ask the mechanic to source one himself, then if he buys a duff one or one that's incompatible, it'll really be up to him to sort out. Bit of a risk buying yourself and paying someone else to fit, would be different if you were fitting it yourself of course

And flashbacks to my 1.25 Fiesta - lovely cars.

    look at the pictures man
if he buys the wrong one all the bits he needs like airbox are incompatable
remember a fitter is fitting, hes not doing this himself with full workshop facilities hes paying a man to throw the donkey in
and although its ages since i dealt with these fords i think you are wrong anyway in relation to the ecu and the two types i posted
(did you see the pictures i posted?)
