Never ever follow links within emails. If you do this, you may find yourself being the victim of identity thef........oh! hang on.

If you think it is genuine, go to the proper website on your browser.

I never do but as Wonga told me they'd email me about it soon and it seemed to fit in I gave it a chance. Didn't enter any details though.

    Hi,

Yes am the latest in this scam from WONGA.

I like many of you checked my bank account to find that wonga took over £800+ out of my bank.

I luckily caught it in time for the bank to refund me the money, but...... this wasn’t the end of it.

I now get letters through my door with different names on different loans all with my address demanding money!.

Wonga said they have now put a stop to my Address but what worries me more is now my credit rating.

Was told by the police to do a full credit check to see what else they might have taken out in my name.

What about your credit rating ?

If its the letters then as long as they aren't in your name then they wont affect your credit rating ?

I thought they might be associated some how with my house.

That's whats the police said anyway.

Lets hope your right. Surprise to find how many people have been scammed off these people.

Houses do not have credit histories, people do.

It doesn't matter who else has a credit history at your property (such as ex-occupants), it won't show up on a credit search for you unless you have a credit relationship with them.

However, addresses where frauds take place or reported ARE flagged so whilst this does not directly impinge on the data subject, it remains a warning nevertheless.

I was defrauded to the tune of £5000 which my bank did not notice, even though it involved 13 transactions in 48 hours. The money was eventually refunded, complicated by the fact that wonga bizarrely paid some money back, leading the bank to initially conclude i was the fraudster. Cards can be cloned fairly easily these days (so I am led to believe) a criminal only needs to obtain your name and address, also easily done as many outlets have this info on file (got any loyalty cards?) and that's about all they need to apply. Once Wonga have card details they can pretty much clean out your bank account. I am now paranoid about checking my bank account and will only use cash at a number of outlets now. I have no way of protecting myself against this as long as Wonga continue to allow loan applicants to operate a loan using two accounts, one to pay the money into and a separate one to withdraw money from (the victims). As far as I can see they operate virtually no security checks, although I've had a letter of apology at this address, they have not addressed it to me, it's addressed to a total stranger - they can't even get that right.
The sooner the OFT close them down, the better, credit unions are a safer option for people who need cash IMHO.

The Smile rep thought online shopping was the mostly likely source of the information for the scammers.

I had several Wonga debits on my account. This particular account I do not use much and thankfully never had much money in it. However the debit card on this account was linked to one online shopping site and the only debit card transactions from this account in this calendar year are to that site. I have now closed my account with them as I cannot see any other way my details were "leaked". I also received a letter from Wonga to my home address but the name on it was wrong. Thankfully my bank refunded me within a couple of hours.

This could so easily be sorted, or at least the fraud vastly reduced by wonga insisting on same bank account for deposit AND the debit card for payment. Isn't that what visa et al changed to cut fraud ie. card details and delivery address much match for most stuff?
