Yorkshire Bank Unfair Charges Question
itsnotfunny
Hello to everybody, I am new to this forum, and I wonder if anybody can offer me advice, or a soloution to my problem? I have recently gone over my overdraft limit, and the bank (Yorkshire) has levied charges of £75.00 to my already very weak bank balance, this has caused me to go even deeper into the red, a visit to my bank yesterday to try to sort things out left me with no option but to pay the charges, three more letters have arrived this morning plunging me into debt I have no chance of escaping from, my bank has a "no refund on bank charges policy" and I am at my wits end, any Ideas what to do next, as I will not be paid again until the end of the month, and at this rate I will owe my entire wages in charges,

Why are the charges unfair?0

do you work for yorkshire bank?0

No he doesn't. But again (and I don't work for any bank), why do you think they are unfair?
You signed up to the account so surely you read the T&Cs which state the charges that would be charged if this sort of thing should happen?
You may be able to phone up and plead ignorance, but it may not work, and it won't work a second time. (although I know you've been into the bank, you could try again by phone)0 -
You have two problems (three if you include the fact that you currently bank with an institution who have some of the highest charges of all the banks).itsnotfunny wrote: »I wonder if anybody can offer me advice, or a soloution to my problem?
The first is why you're incurring the charges (or at least the one that's triggered the current spiral of charges). Poor money management?...living beyond your means?...learning difficulties perhaps?
The second is finding a way out of the aforementioned spiral.
You can forget any reimbursement of charges, so would you like some help and advice on the above problems?
EDIT: And no I don't work for them either, although I have banked with them for over 30 years.0 -
Thank you all for your very helpful replies, I asked the question to perhaps receive some advice, although in hindsight I would have been better reading my "learning difficulties book" (Yorkshire boy) good night and thank you0

No, I don't.itsnotfunny wrote: »do you work for yorkshire bank?
You've headed up your post claiming that they're unfair but haven't explained how or why they are unfair.
My question is rather key to advising you on how to go around getting them back.
As you don't appear to be willing to help yourself, I won't bother.0 -
you won't receive charges every single day until you are paid.
You will receive charges every day you are overdrawn and continue using your card or have direct debits come out.
So don't use your card, cancel any direct debits, and you shouldnt have any more charges come out although you will have a £25 service charge come out next month for being overdrawn this monthSave £300 in Jan £515/£300-Lose 10 lbs in Jan- 8/10,Cap One M/C £0/£200,Cap One Visa £0/£200

It's difficult to give you any sound advice as it's not clear the reasons as to why you have gone overdrawn and what caused the initial charge.
For example was this an oversight and the first time/first occurrence in a while that you have gone over your limit? Was it a bank error or error with a direct debit?
If you were to have a recent history of going overdrawn then sorry to be blunt but why should the bank refund you? You would be aware of the consequences of your actions.
Perhaps you should look at other banks who have different charging structures. Some banks e.g. Halifax do not charge for failed payment items on their full current account, however they do charge for using the overdraft facility, £1/£2 per day or £5 per day for unauthorised overdrafts. Another option clear your overdraft and other debts and start afresh.
I do find it hard to believe the bank have a "no refund on charges policy" In normal circumstances most banks would be lenient if it was a first time charge.0 -
Im asking on behalf of my mother. She earns minimum wage (at 55 it's not much ) and banks with barclays. She has an overdraft which she sometimes goes over. When she does she is charged a stupid amount but not only do they charge her they are not paying her direct debits. i.e mortgage, water, council tax. She found this out when her mortgage company contacted saying she hasn't paid for 3 months!!. She had a meeting in barclays to discuss if she could freeze her overdraft and pay off monthly but they refused and gave her a number for a loan company to help her out. Now she had a bailiff call at her house for late payments which she can'y meet for the high bank charges. Has she got a case???0

This has nothing to do with what has been discussed here.0
