has ebay changed then, because it used to be that if you placed numerous bids, you outbid yourself, and the price went up - it didnt have any way of differentiating who placed the bids, just the amount bid, iyswim

No ebay hasn't changed, the proxy system means that you cannot outbit yourself unless in a very complicated scenario where there is a second bidder in and you although you are showing the highest bid you put in a new proxy that takes you a safe'whole' increment above that second bidder. In that case your bid would move up the partial increment which might be a matter of pennies.

You have never been able to outbit yourself on a non reserve auction if you are the only bidder.

Soo, i do recall in the dim and distant past bidding and putting in a maximum bid price, then subsequently trying to change my maximum bid price and ending up bidding against myself. May have been 2+ years ago...

I have seen it happen (pushing price against yourself) on something I bid on. Think it happens if the EBay site is having a speed wobble.

I have tried the mutiple bid approach to get something on the cheap...has never worked for me in the past, just seems to attract interest in the item.
