Strange Bids

Can someone help me please ?

I have had the same person bid 5 times against an item that I am selling but the bid price has remained the same. I put a starting bid of £6,500 and the bidders name is showing as having bid 5 times at £6,500.

To make matters more curious they have only registered today and my item is the first thing that they have bid on. I have used BayCheck to see what else they've bid on but nothing shows, so I have taken advise from another thread and emailed them asking for ful contact details to protect myself somewhat.

Hope this makes sense to someone.

Hi Phil - Yes it makes perfect sense nothing to panic about. After a bidder puts in thier first bid, they may decide later that their highest bid was not enough. Therefore, they enter a new, higher bid, so that they won't be outbid so easily. Every time the bidder puts in a new bid when there are no other bids, it will keep saying they have put a bid in, but the price will remain the same as they won't outbid themselves!

So your bidder has put in 5 bids, which may seem a bit odd, but is perfectly acceptable.

    Hope that helps!

    Josh :)

you often find that multiple bids puts other people off bidding as they think that they are up against a lot of competition or that a much bigger bid may be required!

Good point Whizzkid, with this in mind is it legitimate of me to remove the first 4 bids ?

Sorry if these seem simple questions but we're knew to this selling lark.

There isn't any point at all in removing all but one of his bids as the bid amount will stay the same. If you don't want him to bid then you need to remove all his bids.

Thanks Soo, but what I meant was so that it appeared that there was only one bid, not multiple as the previous post implied that multiple bids would look bad.

has ebay changed then, because it used to be that if you placed numerous bids, you outbid yourself, and the price went up - it didnt have any way of differentiating who placed the bids, just the amount bid, iyswim

Another bidder may well be put off if they see that the current winning bidder has placed several more bids. However, you are also assured that your single bidder has already bid higher than his current winning bid.

As I understand it, you don't have the option of removing anything other than all of an individual's bids. i.e. In this case you can't remove 4 of the 5 bids.

No, that's not the way it works now. Although I'm not entirely sure if what you're describing happens when you outbid yourself at a bid below a reserve price when that reserve price has not yet been reached.

    Makes sense, thanks Hairy. :T
