    I had a go at this. I bought a box & split them into 2 portions & I didn't wash them.

I kept some in a brown bag in a cool place & they lasted 5 days - although ever so slightly shrivelled, they were still fine but I wanted to use them.

The others, I sliced & put them into a screwtop jar, also in a cool place. After a couple of days, condensation formed on the glass. I debated whether to leave them but gave in & opened it & wiped the inside of the jar. I did the same 2 days later - the fifth day, they were more shrivelled that the uncut ones but I used them anyway.

I think they do need to be at least partially dried before bottling.

Perhaps it might have been better if I'd kept the jar in the dark - maybe inside a brown paper bag? :D

I remove them from the plastic container, put a layer of kitchen paper under them and replace them. Then cover with another layer of kitchen paper. They last much longer like that.
Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!

any left over I just slice and freeze for use in soups and stews
  • I'm not really a kitchen gadget person but I love my mushroom bag (though it only holds about three or four portions). Keeps mushrooms dry for at least a week

I just remove them from packaging & bung them in the crisper drawer in an old ice cream tub lined with kitchen paper with no lid, turning them every other day, they normally then last nearly 2 weeks that way.
Ironically I find the basic pack's last longer than the loose.
