suffering anti-semitism at work making me unhappy
northernworker
I am suffering from nasty anti-semitic comments from several (but not all) of my fellow co-workers, including my boss, which is making me unhappy, tearful and frightened. I was asked about the origins of my name and since I was saying they were Jewish I have been treated differently by people who previously were kind towards me. I do not see what my background has to do with my job. They have been saying evil things saying I should be gassed, making nasty remarks about Israel (to which I have no connection) and just being horrible. I have been given smaller tasks, denied shift changes and annual leave where my Gentile colleagues have been allowed time off. I have been followed outside of work by some of my co-workers. I cannot go and look for another job properly without time off. Scarpering may not seem like the right option but I can’t think how to cope otherwise. I haven’t been keeping a diary of events as I have been too stressed and miserable to do so. Ironically my performance at work in terms of my output has increased with quality – they are making nasty comments about that too. I would appreciate any kind advice thank you as.

What a situation to be in . Does your boss have a higher boss you can talk to or is there a human resource officer in your work ? Hope the situation improves very soon for you and sorry I can't suggest anything more to help .0

Ask them politely to stop making the remarks as you find them to be offensive.0

That's disgusting. I'm so sorry you are experiencing this. I was born Jewish (although don't practice) and suffered anti-semitism during my school years. I am sorry you're going through this and I hope the situation gets better xx0

Why do you think so?0 -
What a horrible situation to find yourself in. I hope that you have family and friends to support you.
A couple of questions:
How big is the company?
How long have you been there?
Are you aware of any policies about bullying/complaints - Do you have an HR handbook?0 -
Racial discrimination is illegal and that is the law PERIOD.

Follow the advice in the link, call ACAS and speak to your union rep if you are a member.
You must bring this to the attention of HR as yemployer, is legally responsible for acts of discrimination, harassment and victimisation carried out by workers who are employed by them in the course of their employment.Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing'

That's unacceptable. You should let them know how you do not appreciate their comments. Racial and religious discrimination is illegal as entrenched in the Equality Act 2010. Give the equality and human rights commission a call on 0845 6046610 they'll be happy to advise.0

Generally you do need to go through your company grievance and formal process before EHRC get involved and they will advise you to do that firstlyDont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing'
