Tea length / calf length dress what are your thoughts? - anyone chosen one?

I've tried on a beautiful Mark Lesley one and feel lovely in it. It's a small church wedding, with a buffet reception and no night do, so quite informal. I'll have a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old to pick up/ run around after so I think id feel a bit silly in a big formal dress. But I'm worried I might just regret not having a full on dress? I'm getting my dress second hand with a budget of £300 so need to keep checking eBay etc. Anyone having a shorter dress and what are ur thoughts on it?

  • I havent got a tea length dress, I have a full length dress (which I do love), but the only time I ever get dress envy and dress wobbles is when I see lovely tea length dresses. If you want one and it suits you and your day go for it.

(Im a July bride and theres at least 2 brides on that thread with tea length dresses)

Sorry that doesnt really help but just thought I would share my opinion! (go for it!!) :D
  • no help on the short dress thing but there are loads for your budget here

but i am also a big fan of going for what you want and like if you love it then its the one for you!

if you wanted the big dress for the church could you not get a removable skirt? or a two piece with a big skirt and a little skirt then you get the best of both worlds

    after a quick google
    http://www.ukweddingdress.co.uk/weddingdressgallery1.html
lots of 2 pieces on there

then switch to a shorter skirt like this

(sorry i just love shopping lol)

  • I wore one (Mrs Knight incase you wondered) and I don't for a second regret it. I loved it and my shoes and had a fab veil to go with it. Mine didn't cost £300 new but that was a few years ago now :) If i did it again I'd go for tea length.

Meeeeeeee!! I'm wearing one!! And I cannot wait!!
The scene - an informal garden party. I picture myself stood next to MrD in his trousers and shirt (by this stage I imagine he'll have got fed up of his jacket and that'll have come off - possibly with his tie as well), and me in my fabulous tea length dress. I cannot wait!! We're going to look fab together (well we already do ha!! Even fabber then! :D)
I didn't want a full length dress for the simple reason I'm not an overly girlie girl and having a garden out doors party a full length dress would be ruined.
When I went looking for dresses (last July) there were hardly any short tea length dresses in the bridal shops (I emailed them all beforehand to see what they had in so I wasn't wasting anyones time). In the end I have gone with a full length dress - but am getting the bottom chopped off. This was much easier and opened up more dresses for me to try on. I love my dress and cannot wait to wear it. It will sit approximately a foot off the floor - so it's kinda mid calf length once I have my killer heels on. I am soo pleased that it's half bespoke - in fact the manufacturers are making it to my desired length in the factory so I won't have any wobbles over a dress maker making a hash of it.
In case you can't tell I am rather excited!!
(If you want to see my dress PM me and I'll send you details of how to find it - unfortunately it's on a flash site so I can't link straight to the dress - not that I would even if I could - just incase there are any eyes).

The hardest thing for me has been to find wow shoes to wear with it. I really don't want normal wedding shoes - and even posh wedding shoes (think Rainbow club/Else ones) are too 'normal'. (I was tempted to go for coloured shoes but wasn't sure they'd sit right if I didn't have any other colour on me - I'm not carrying my bouquet around all night just so my shoes match ha!!!)
  • I'm not even engaged yet but I already know I want a tea length dress, although that's mainly because I'm only 5'2" and long dresses make me look like I've been nailed into the floor. Plus it's an excuse to invest in a gorgeous pair of bright shoes - no point hiding them under a big dress in my view!

My OH's sister had a tea length dress for her wedding and looked absolutely gorgeous, and also said she found it really easy to dance and move in whereas a lot of the long dresses she'd tried had (to her) felt quite restrictive, both in terms of being able to move and being paranoid about getting it dirty - their wedding was in a country hotel with a big meadow out the back that was used for photos and games, so she'd have been constantly fretting about picking/hooking up the skirt and suchlike. But if your wedding was indoors all day then maybe that wouldn't be so much of an issue.

I went as far as buying one but it didn't fancy over my bust! I love them and if our wedding wasn't 1930's glamour I would go for one.

There are loads of short ones in your budget, especially if you look on E bay.

I adored Fly Dragon Fly's tea length dress!

(P.S Sorry I was so excited about a 'tea length dress' I didn't see your budget!)

I'm having a tea length dress too! Mainly because I've never seen myself in a longer one, but also because I don't want to drag a massive dress around all day in the Vegas heat and I know I look awesome in a 50s style silhouette ;) All the full length ones look pretty much the same to me (no offense meant to anyone with a full length!) I just want something a bit different.

The Dolly Couture Beverlywood is still my favourite and she will customise it with the sleeves and sash I want, can't wait! I should probably stop looking at others though, saw a lovely Justin Alexander Signature one earlier today...

I can't wait to start trying dresses on, need to lose a bit more weight first though :o
