Amazon super saver delivery woes

I ordered something on 8th Feb, which was dispatched on 9th. Still no sign of it! Amazon says unless I wait till 24th Feb, they won't do anything!!

Assuming Amazon uses Royal Mail's 2nd class delivery, I should have received it by now.

or they are just delaying it so that customers end up paying for delivery to get it quicker?

While I can't say whether that's what is happening with your order, it's absolutely the case that free delivery is deliberately slower. If you pay, Amazon will dispatch it quicker and usually send it by a quicker delivery method. Free means slow. Is it coming from IndigoStarfish, Amazon's preferred merchant in Jersey? Orders coming from the Channel Islands can take longer.

What was the delivery estimate in your dispatch e-mail? Shipping on Feb 9 by super saver might well have come Saturday or Monday, but I wouldn't say it's that much out of the ordinary for it not to have to turned up yet. If Amazon did do something now, you'd probably end up with the original arriving before you got a replacement anyway.
This is everybody's fault but mine.

Assuming they are using RM your invoice should still give you an estimated delivery date or a deliver by.....You could always check at your local Delivery Office to check if it's there, sometimes the red cards get folded in with the junk and thrown in the bin.

Amazon don't always use RM for their free delivery either, sometimes they use... can't remember if it's yodel or one of the others.

Yesterday I received supersaver items dispatched on the 7th and the 9th and both were delivered by Royal Mail.
  • Royal Mail quote second class post as 3 working days (excludes weekends) so if dispatched on the 9th, the 14th (today) would be Royal Mail's aim but there can always be delays. When buying small items sent via Royal Mail, I find 2nd Class post from Amazon very slow where as paying for 1st Class usually the parcel turns up the next day.

well if Amazon segregate their packages by postal type(i would assume so as it will be cheaper for them)
then its easy for the RM MC's to prioritise the 1st class packets

My account page is showing estimated delivery 16 Feb by Royal Mail (it is a medium size parcel). In the past, whenever I bought from Amazon it arrived well ahead of time.

Do they always send from warehouse nearest to customer's address? I have 2 Amazon warehouses 15 miles from me!

no,they use a variety of warehouses
depends on stock, staff levels, work load etc
  • I've used Amazon for years but since christmas i've noticed they are far slower with their free delivery service than they used to be. Guess they want as many people to sign up to prime as possible.

Prime is worthwhile if you buy loads of items from Amazon. Otherwise for occasional purchases (like me) I don't think Prime makes sense.

Of course, I wouldn't expect anything else. Some sellers over on the eBay forums say they use 2nd Class post as they find no real difference in general but I've always found 2nd Class slow where I live so am happy to pay the extra if I want something faster.

Going off topic here but when I post my PPI post, everything is 1st Class or Airmail and I separate the parcels in to bags based on 1st Class LL/Packet and Airmail for Europe/Zone and Format for ROTW resulting in four different bags. The sorting office then tip it all in one trolley. Why do Royal Mail insist on separate bags (and spend money on printing different tags and sending them to me) if it all gets tipped together? (I understand 2nd Class/Surface will be tipped in a separate trolley so does need separating).
