House = white goods. How to choose a dishwasher?

Hello

I'm currently attempting to sort out my first home so that I can move in, but part of this is buying appliances and it's not my area of expertise. I've managed to buy kettel, microwave and all the kitchen related items that you could wish for except a slimline dishwasher (because thats all the space there is for it) and a big (but less than 149cm) freezer.

It's the dishwasher that's causing me a headache. So I've been shopping around, looking at prices and the various models.

I would be tempted to buy a Bosch Exxcel, except my mother and brother both had one and both have broken recently. It's also an expensive option and my maximum budget is about 250ukp.

I was tempted by the Hotpoint SDL510G, which I managed to talk down to 260ukp at a local store, but couldn't quite bring myself to buy it because of it being overbudget.

Aside from this I suspect that Beko DE2542FW could do the job, but I have no experience of the brand or its quality. I'm a bit nervous of making the wrong choice as its something to live with for quite a while. It is however on sale for what seems (not saying it is) a bargainous 180ukp at Sains-bugs.

Basically I need a bit or practical advice - please, a quick written fwap and a sending in the right direction, even if one I've overlooked would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

  • Recently i bought a bosch slimline and unfortunately they seem more expensive than the full size ones...funily some consume more than the full sizes aswell
2 years guarantee as standard with them and for 80 quid you can extend to 5 but i dont see it a good spend
Mine bosch 59l12gb i think very quiet and so far we have only used the fast short economic wash and the glases are shinny as never been

    I found this for you:
    http://www.appliance-reviews.co.uk/p/Beko-DE2542FS-Slimline-Dishwashers-in-Silver-20917/reviews#tabs

Incidentally, after many years of buying 'stuff' I STILL take ages to decide whether to make a purchase lol.
My telly, for example, took me 9 months to research on the net, ask questions of my friends etc then found a friend who worked in the Sony factory who got 20% off for me. Great, except I took so long, the model I wanted had been discontinued :rotfl:
On the plus side, I've never had any problems with any of my appliances, so there might be some merit in it after all
You have been reading.....another magnificent post by garethgas
  • See if you can alter the kitchen in anyway easily to accomodate a full size. You will then have more choice and better value. Slimline are expensive and don't hold a lot
  • I had a new kitchen 18 months ago and bought a beko dishwasher & freezer, both have been fine. The dishwasher is a slimline one but not your model. Mine was an integrated one which looks lovely and works well but was a pain to fit in. I think most built in appliances are. I had 2 zanussi dishwashers before that that were brilliant and lasted years.
  • Have you tried a free trial on which.co.uk?

p.s. consider what warranty they offer and if you can get additional free. For example if I buy electronic goods with my Bayclaycard I get 12 months additional warranty on top of the manufacturer standard

Is it just for you? A slimline holds 7/8 place settings as opposed to th 12 in the full size.

As faras the models you have mentioned the bosch would be my choice every time, Beko would not get a lookin and the hotpoint isn't much better. As the programmes take about an hour the noise levels are important .

Do you have a stockist of siemens near you? same company as bosch, yhough usually a bit cheaper.

Another vote for a budget Bosch, the more expensive models just tend to offer extra programs that you won't ever use.
My first Bosch lasted 7 years, second one now about 8 years old.

  • sunshinetours - Thank you for the suggestion but I have actually just finished installing the new kitchen. I'm afraid that the layout of the room and siting of water supply and the gas meter meant that when I was designing it the only option for a dishwasher was slimline. There's only me so the smaller capacity isn't really an issue.

anndy25 - Useful to have the feedback on Beko, which is reassuring. Thank you.

kwaks - All the places that I've been to look at in person seem to mainly stock Hotpoint, Bosch, Indesit, Beko and very cheap own brand flimsy looking slimline dishwashers. I appreciate that its something that can be bought online, but I'd rather have had a look at one in person first. I will have a search for Siemens stockists and see if anything pops up.

macman - I have liked using my mum and my brother's Bosch dishwashers, but but but... Well my mums died after five years and my brothers after two and a half. I appreciate both are out of the warranty terms but it hasn't filled me with confidence. Especially considering the relative expense on the basic models versus other brands.

I'm leaning towards buying the Beko one online. I have seen it in person, it doesn't have a delay start and thats a shame but I don't think that I'm on an energy tariff that penalises me for using during the day. And it means that I have 70ukp from the dishwasher buying pot to add to the freezer buying pot.

    Thank you for the advice.

Bosch spares are available at least 10m years after the model is discontinued, I would doubt that'll be the case with Beko after 5 years.
I would venture to say that your mum's/brother's experience with Bosch is not at all typical.
My other Bosch white goods (w/machine and tumble drier) are still going strong at 13 years old (I'm probably going to regret saying that).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
