I have also had a letter today, I was a bit shocked as looking on the website it doesnt say anything about the £26K cutoff with 1 child. We are just over this threshold both work full time and I am really annoyed if this is the case as although it's only £10 a week it's a massive £545 per year which buys my daughter clothes and dancing classes and anything else she needs for school, nothing has been said about this. This just isn't fair:mad::mad::mad:

what isnt fair is that the tax payer has been paying for your childs dance classes in the first place.

I don't think this has been particularly kept quiet. As other posters have said the HMRC doesn't really have an advertising budget but the information has been available. It was announced in the 2010 Budget, there's a link on the direct.gov website under Tax Credits
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/TaxCredits/index.htm

and on the HMRC tax credit website: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcreditsbudget/index.htm

It's been mentioned on here and other advice websites since it was announced and it's been mentioned by various politicians and media outlets. If you do an internet search for tax credits news or tax credit changes you get a lot of links from quite recently (last few days in some cases) all the way back to when the changes were first announced in the budget.

With the way the economy is going and the general media attention surrounding benefits it's hardly been a secret that the benefits system is being changed.

Why is it not fair? Surely as a parent you should be providing clothes for your child not other tax payers. Dance classes are a nice extra but not essential!

The changes have been known about for ages and are on the HMRC site. Its £10 a week which equates to an extra 2 hours a week if you truly need to up your income.

No worries until Tax Credits goes and become part of the Universal Credit.

It seems that under UC, both parents will have work conditions put on them if they still want welfare payments for their children. The days of the state picking up the tab for a stay-at-home parent, seems to be over.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Received today letter from HMR&C saying that from April 2012 Child Tax Credits will no longer be paid if household income is in excess of £26k (£500 per week) & they have 1 child.
This cap has been kept quiet by the media and politicians, and I find it appalling.

You're conflating two very different £26ks. The tax credit reductions just so happen to give a ROUGH income limit of £26k for families with ONE child (not two, three, four, etc) and NO CHILDCARE COSTS. It isn't a "cap" on tax credits and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the total benefits cap of £26k.
