So you've already more than halved the cost-quite a result.
But I still think you need to find an independent who can examine the existing boiler and advise if it's economically repairable.

  • Ignore BG - they told us our old boilers PC board had gone after plugging their little computer in and that one would need to be ordered, would take three days to come and cost over £300. Got a second opinion from an independent who said it was the fan and fixed it that afternoon for £50!

BG also quoted us £6000 for a new boiler which we got fitted by an independent for £2100 including the widening of inlet pipes, complete system flush and rad thermostats, none of which were on the BG quote!

Get at least 3 independent quotes. If no-one can repair, check to see what grants you may be entitled to. Then try crisis loans, credit unions or family for the rest.

Remember that a new boiler will save you a lot of money in energy bills as well as it will be a lot more efficient.

PS - you say you have a tank - consider having a combi boiler fitted instead if you do need to replace - this saves quite a bit of money as you only heat the water as you need it - may also solve any issues with old tanks.

Have you got a pic of the damaged / missing part and also has the boiler been left 'immediately dangerous' or 'at risk'?

OP said it has been 'condemned' and no CH or DHW -so my assumption was that it was disconnected by BG.

Thats one of the main problems with british gas they wont go near an old boiler with a barge pole.

I really wish that was correct, bg work on any old rubbish.

This thread more than reassures me i didn't take out any sort of cover despite the girl from BG homecare more or less ridiculing me because i insisted i'll use an independent engineer when it comes to my boiler thank you very much. She sneered at me because i wanted to actually 'pay' for parts that BG would 'cover' all in. She couldn't grasp the concept that IMO BG make more than enough money and small independent guys actually need a leg up.
Sorry Op but all i can reiterate is to find other, smaller engineeers to come and price up your problem. Good luck!

    What does condemned mean..?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

"condemned" cannot be used again till its either fully fixed and tested or replaced entirely.

great enws on the price cas!

ollski wish it were true, my sisters landlord was with bg homeplan, problem with the boiler, said its too old doen't come under our remit. Needs replacing, landlord phoned us and partner fixed the problem cost £60 for the part.

He has a fully working boiler. Probably better if my sister had a combi-boiler for energy effiecncy. In her words she prefers the old style one with a tank.

I know a few people this has happened to :( with bg. But then again we basically said to our landlady, this is when my partner was trining to be a plumber. Change the boiler, its broken or wee moving out. BG basically kept the pilot light going and thats it.

Our gas has been capped at the mains so the boiler isn't dangerous.

Had another independent out yesterday and he also says he thinks we are on a two pipe system. So seem BG got it wrong!! He is sending a quote in the post but agreed with everything the first independent said.
