I have personalised mine with a pink air freshner hanging from my note stand, a photo of my other half and daughter above my printer. I also have a real (dead:p) spider inside a clear paper weight on my monitor riser which i find keeps most people from using my desk - haha.

I have a fake plant that flaps its leaves when the sun shines through my window, I can't keep a real plant alive longer than 2 days!

And at Easter, Halloween and Christmas i go mad and decorate my office with loads of decorations, pictures etc! Staff coming in to use the fax machine or to give me work thinks it is great and makes them smile!

I personally have a "clear desk" attitude, but to me that means not having a huge stack of filing, have the majority of the desk visible, and maintaining a professional look. Where I work now has a "totally clear desk policy" and it looks awful. There's no personalisation anywhere, nothing pleasant or conversation-starting. It's open plan, I can see about a hundred people from my desk, and its soul-less. I feel like a battery hen.

  • Personally I can't be doing with clutter but I do tend to buy my own pens, and folders in colours and designs that I like, just so they look "nice". I also was given a birthday card with a nice picture of cherubs on the front which I really liked, so that's gone up on my wall. .

    My desk at home (self-employed):
Old iMac sat there for OU work. Usually a pad or two, diary, second pad, few pens, maybe crayons or pencils (I'm a private tutor)
Behind me is my shelving unit with OU books and tutoring stuff on different shelves, a calender so I know where I am, my teapots and some teds.
On the seat next to me is the books I need for tutoring later in the week and bits I might need then.

I'd never be able to have a clear desk, I'm happy with my organised clutter

  • Some very un-jolly people on this board today!

The tea-jar things sound good, a nice touch but not overboard. I'm not really one for having too much stuff on my desk at work but things like having my own pens and coasters make a big difference. I'm also one of those people who tries to tidy up as much as possible at the end of the day but often fails!

Another thing I've got which you might want to think about is having a coloured jar instead of a bog standard desk tidy for pens/pencils etc. I've got a lightly coloured, translucent green one which again is a nice touch :)

Not your average working environment with picnic tables and slides!!

"Some very un-jolly people on this board today!" Indeed! You would have thought asking for some cheap MSE ways to liven up a work day would be a positive topic... Ah well, thanks for the constructive comments guys :D

Yeah but asking how to pimp your desk MSE style on an employment board (you know with actual employment troubles?) probably isn't the best way to bring about positivity

@Cherry_Bomb- please direct me to the appropriate place then? I did say at the beginning that I wasn't sure this was the correct place so someone could have mentioned it sooner! Not to worry :)
