    eh ?!?!?

ive worm glasses for over 20 years and never paid any where near that and have "designer" glasses
im currently wearing "alain miklis" -4.25 lenses ultra thin, UV and anti scratch coatings and still didnt pay anywhere near that, if youve paid £700 they must be platinum with diamonds or something or they seriously saw you coming...

Then you are lucky , been wearing glasses twice as long as you . My pair , one before last was over £600 . No diamonds , no platinum. Yes they were variable focus and the lenses were Zeiss I shopped around . But my eyesight is priceless , so I won't buy off the web/by post.

    less luck, more moneysaving
I have no doubt the same pair you bought could be bought at half if not less that on line and even instore elsewhere if you ordered frame on line and had lenses made fitted instore, zeiss or not.
These werent bought on line, but i have spare pairs that were, but I buy my contact on line too. Variables do cost more but as a challenge just price up that order for a similar/ same pair from goggles4u and post what the difference would have been.

i had pairs ive bought online checked instore by an optician who could find no fault to the lens and they were perfect, he wanted to know the supplier himself as he couldnt price them for any where near that here. Frames are one of the the biggest rip offs in this country with markups in the 1000s% at times with add ones for lenses too

Well lucky you. How dare you take the p*** out of my eyesight?!

I simply don't believe that you could find a pair of 1.9 index glass lenses to a -13 prescription for much less.

And how would you approach buying frames online with no idea as to whether they would be suitable for the lenses I'm buying?

With you on this esuhi on this . My prescription ( wish I could remember the figures ) are 'off' the scale i.e not on the standard price list . So before I am given a price , the Zeiss supplier has to be contacted. Although I quoted over £600 for a pair , that was back in 2008 , last years pair had dropped to below £400 .

Money never comes into the equation , I want great service and the best glasses money can buy ( with out being ripped off) I can afford it !

That's three times in one thread you have boosted this company.

I would not go so far as to suggest you had an interest but just to balance up your experience people may like to read about the experiences of others.

This is a moneysaving site and my experience, as you somewhat snootily suggest, has always been very good at an excellent price for my varifocals.

Well, I haven't been able to afford it in the past - spending £650 a year on glasses is quite an expense. But I don't have a choice. I need good service because the refraction angles are so great that small changes in position result in great angular distortions.

I just can't believe that some people are so arrogant and rude that they assume that anyone that spends more than they do on what are essentially medical aids is an idiot.

I'd love to know how to get a decent pair of glasses for just a few hundred quid. I might even be able to treat myself to designer frames.

Im not here to take the !!!! out of any one or the eyesight, just trying to make the point that cheaper alternatives are available.
low cost DOESNT have to mean low quality

    this company
    http://www.thinlenses.co.uk
even does reglaze service where by you provide your own frame.
You can get "well known" designer frames for £100-200 with cheap lens in or just a nice cheaper frame if you liked it
then get them reglazed to your specification

    Reglaze Service £20.00
    Distance/Everything
    Glass
    1.9 + Index Lenses £148.00
    Anti-Reflective Coating Free
    UV400 Protective Coating Free
    Scratch Resistant Coating Free
    Total £168.00

that would still be a cheaper option

or a pair of calvin kleins from their site
    CK 860 £76.00
    Reading -
    Glass -
    1.9 + Index Lenses £148.00
    Anti-Reflective Coating Free
    UV400 Protective Coating Free
    Scratch Resistant Coating Free
    Total £224.00

    http://www.glassesframesandlenses.com
this company also specialises in high prescription lenses including zeiss
Booth & Bruce 867 frames in Cherry Cola at £100.00
    + Distance lenses FREE
+ Ultra thin 1.9 index glass lenses at £189.00
+ Standard colourless lenses FREE and Super Hydrophobic Coating FREE Change options
    Total: £289.00

Its not about being able to afford things, i can afford what ever i need to afford I just choose to pay as little as possible for everything, meaning I have more money to spend on things in general, this is a moneysaving site afterall...
  • I have reatively good eyesight - just deteriorating due to age and lens muscles not responding as they should therefore need reading glasses.

I had been to private optician on highstreet and felt it a bit expensive so next time went to Specsavers.

Not impressed. Admittedly sited in busy city centre but treated a bit like cattle and glasses not fitted correctly and uncomfortable. Cheaper than £69 the frames were not jointed.

You can get £10 pair in supermarket with jointed frames - lol.

Never again - rather go back to private optican and pay a little bit extra - learnt my lesson the hard way though must admit resent having to wear glasses at all having has Ok sight until recently

We used to have a lovely private optician in town. When he semi-retired he sold to a company with a number of branches, but not national.

It was great while Mr S was still there, but eventually he did finish. There is now a succession of very young opticians, managed by the dispensing optician who is a horrible guy.

In my area Specsavers is the best. OK,Scotsbob?

You got that one right. It's not just in the UK Specsavers have a bad reputation (see link in my previous post) but overseas as well
