  • I went to GC last Jan, we hired a car and drove from Vegas. 5 hour trip but I slept most the way so can't comment on that. When we got there we used Papillon who were really good. Some of the chopper flights from vegas aren't as good as they don't get you as close. We dropped into the canyon in the chopper was awesome. Beware of the time difference though! there is an hours difference between the canyon and vegas....we nearly missed our chopper hehe.
  • I did the "landing in the Canyon" trip with Sundance Helicopters last December and it was a GREAT trip. When we we're climbing out of the Canyon (after lunch) one of the doors came open and we had to make an emergecy landing! What's more I bought a DVD of OUR flight to prove it! It's also good for keeping away unwanted visitors. Of course pay me a visit, I'll play you my 90 min DVD of my flight to the Canyon!

Got to be careful here. Arizona does NOT use daylight saving time, so in winter there is an hours difference between Vegas and the GC, but after the second week in March they are at the same time. ...and what it means is the UTAH and Arizona are on the same tiem during winter but an hour apart during summer.

..and to really muck you up, if you go to the touristy places in northeast Arizona Canyon De Chelle, monument Valley be careful with local regional timings as the Navajo Nation region DOES use daylight saving time.
  • We drove from vegas to GC at the start of January. if you have a good car and a full day to spend its good fun. Its about a 5 hour drive but you get to drive through the desert, along Route 66 and there are plenty of places to stop for a leg stretch and food.

You HAVE to stop at the Flintstones "theme park" place just a few miles before GC. Its hilarious. So run down and things falling apart, but still good fun. Costs about $6 to get in. You need to leave early in the morning to get up there in good time for walking and stuff but its a good day out and you get to see a bit of the desert.

We did the Champagne Breakfast trip with Papillon its was awesome, very early morning pickup from hotel but the whole thing was so well orgainised. Do it as the others say its not cheap but once in a lifetime and the views are spectacular. Landing by the river at the bottom of the canyon was so unreal, cold but silent with just the sound of the river... spectacular....

I too have used Papillon (several times even) for a Grand Canyon trip and can't recommend the experience highly enough. Standing inside the Grand Canyon was absolutely fantastic.

The last time we used them (Oct 06) we did not leave from McCarren (Las Vegas) airport, but instead had a bus ride to a small, dedicated heliport - bus ride was maybe 30 to 45 minutes, not too long.

The helicopter ride is incredibly smooth and a fantastic way to travel.

I also did a Vegas night flight with Papillon. This was fantastic too, but far too short (less than 10 minutes flight time, and you simply don't want it to end).

I also know people who have used Sundance, they too sounded like a very good and professional outfit.
